Delaware 89, Long Island 76 December 3, 2003 Prothro Scoring Spree Leads Hens Over Long Island Chris Prothro scored 16 of his career-high 21 points in the final six minutes of the opening half Complete Game Statistics BROOKLYN, NY -- Sophomore Chris Prothro came off the bench to score 16 of his career-high 21 points in a nine-minute span in the first half to lead the University of Delaware men's basketball team to its third road victory of the season with an 89-76 non-league win over Long Island University Wednesday night at the Schwartz Athletic Center. The Hens (3-1), coming off a last-second 74-72 loss to San Francisco in their home opener Sunday, improved to 3-0 on the road this season. ³Prothro led four scorers in double figures. David Lunn added 15 points, Mike Ames chipped in with 14 points, and point guard Mike Slattery added 12 points and nine assists, including his 300th career dish, to lead the Blue Hens. Long Island fell to 2-1 on the season despite a 19-point effort off the bench from Brandon Thomas. James Williams added 14 points while Raymond Edwards added 12 points and Esa Maki-Tulokas added 11 points and seven rebounds. The Blackbirds shot 46.4 percent from the field and held a 36-29 advantage on the boards but were hurt by 25 turnovers. Prothro, who scored just seven points in the first three games of the season, dominated the action over the final six minutes of the first half to help the Blue Hens to a narrow 47-43 lead. He scored 16 points in the final 5:48 of the half, including one stretch where he scored 10 straight points for the Hens in a span of 57 seconds. He started the spree with a three-pointer, followed with two free throws, connected on another three, and culminated the run with a slam dunk to put the Hens up 32-28. He added another three-pointer and Herb Courtney added five points in the final 2:10 of the half to pace the Hens. Long Island rallied early in the second half, cutting the lead to one point at 54-53 on a dunk by Thomas with 14:59 remaining. But Delaware's Raphael Madera responded with two quick baskets to give UD some breathing room. The Hens built the lead back up to eight points at 66-58, but LIU came back again to cut the lead to four at 70-66 on a Thomas three-point play with 7:45 remaining. They would never get closer than that the rest of the way. Delaware, which converted 33 of 66 shots from the field, improving to 19-1 all-time under head coach David Henderson when shooting 50 percent or better, then won it with defense and foul shooting. The Hens held Long Island to just two field goals in the final 5:34 and converted 8 of 10 from the foul line in the final 2:03 to put the game away. The Hens are 3-0 on the road to start the season for the first time since 1998-99.
