St. Mary's 72 OT November 21, 2003 Blue Hens Rally from 10 Points Down at Halftime for Season-Opening Win Sophomore Rulon Washington came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points Game Statistics EMMITSBURG, MD -- Sophomore guard Rulon Washington came off the bench to spark a comeback from 10 points down at halftime by scoring a career-high 17 points as the University of Delaware men's basketball squad opened its 2003-2004 season with a 75-72 overtime victory over host Mt. St. Mary's Friday night at Knott Arena. The Blue Hens (1-0) trailed 40-30 at halftime but put together a big rally in the second half and appeared to have the game won in regulation when Mike Ames (17 points) hit two free throws with 15 seconds left. Mt. St. Mary's (0-3) sent the game into overtime when Charles Cook nailed a three-pointer with just three seconds left for a 62-62 tie. Delaware took control in overtime, converting 9 of 11 free throws overall, including five by David Lunn in the final minute, to complete the comeback. It was the Blue Hens' biggest comeback win since overcoming a 12-point halftime deficit vs. UMBC Jan. 6, 1993 for a 106-98 overtime victory at the Bob Carpenter Center. Washington, a sophomore backup point guard, hit on seven of eight shots from the field for 17 points to lead the Blue Hens. Ames added 17 points while Lunn chipped in with 12 points. Mike Slattery scored nine points and dished seven assists while Calvin Smith pulled a team-high eight rebounds. The Hens converted just 9 of 22 free throws in regulation, but hit them when they counted in the extra session by sinking 9 of 11 from the charity stripe. Mt. St. Mary's got a game-high 30 points from guard Landy Thompson, who hit on 12 of 23 shots from the field, while forward Kiel Butler chipped in with 16 points. The Mountaineers led by as much as 13 points in the first half at 34-21 as Delaware went more than five minutes without a field goal at one point and committed 13 turnovers during the stanza. Mt. St. Mary's, led by Thompson's 17 first-half points and 53 percent shooting from the field (17 of 32), eventually settled for the 40-30 halftime margin. Delaware fought back in the second half as the Hens shot a blistering 68.8 percent from the field (11 of 16) while holding the Mount to just six field goals in 20 attempts (30.0 percent). The Mountaineers still led by 10 points at 48-38 with 13:16 left in regulation, but the Hens outscored Mt. St. Mary's 10-3 during one stretch to tie the game at 53-53 on a jumper by freshman Henry Olawoye with 2:59 left. After two lead changes, the Hens went up 62-59 as Ames converted a layup with 1:10 left and hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. Cook's only second half field goal, a three-pointer with three seconds left, sent the game into overtime. The extra session featured three ties, the final one with 1:20 left when Butler converted two free throws for the Mount to tie the score at 68-68. But Lunn followed with four straight free throws in a 25-second span to put UD up for good.
