#10 Saint Joseph's 75, Delaware 54 December 30, 2003 Early Second Half Burst Leads Hawks Over Blue Hens Complete Statistics NEWARK, DE -- Saint Joseph's backcourt tandem of All-American Jameer Nelson and Delonte West combined for 38 points and the 10th ranked Hawks broke open a close game with quick start in the second half on the way to a 75-54 non-league men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Nelson overcame eight turnovers by scoring 20 points while West added 18 points, six assists, and six rebounds and Dwayne Jones chipped in with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as Saint Joseph's (10-0) matched its best start since 1964-65 with the victory. The Hawks, ranked 10th by both the Associated Press and USA Today, were the highest ranked team to play at the BCC, which was built in 1992. Delaware (6-3), which was coming off an 85-59 win over Siena in its last outing last Tuesday, shot just 32.8 percent from the field (19 of 58) and was just 5 of 17 from beyond the three-point arc. Freshman center Raphael Madera (#31 at right) came off the bench to hit on 8 of 10 shots from the field and finish with a career-high 16 points but was the only Blue Hen in double figures. Delaware's starting five managed just 17 points with leading scorer Mike Ames (17.1 ppg) being held to just six points on 2 of 9 shooting. Freshman Herb Courtney added eight points off the bench for Delaware. "Saint Joseph's is an excellent team," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, whose team had won four of its last five games entering the contest. "We played tough defense in the first half and we felt good going into the lockerroom. But we were tentative in the second half on defense and they picked up their game offensively because we gave them a lot of open looks." Saint Joseph's led the entire first half but never by more than six points as the Blue Hens stayed close. Ames hit two free throws with five seconds left to cut the Hawks' lead to 29-25 at intermission. But Saint Joseph's put the game away early in the second stanza. Madera hit a jumper 90 seconds into the half and David Lunn followed with a three-point play 36 seconds later to cut the lead to 37-30. But Saint Joseph's answered with an 11-0 run, which included seven points from Nelson, including a three-pointer with 15:41 left, that upped the lead to 48-30. When Mike Slattery connected on a jumper with 15:10 left to end the SJU run, it snapped a three minute and 20 second field goal drought for the Blue Hens. Delaware never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way. The Hawks, who have now defeated Delaware six straight times and 18 of the last 19 meetings, led by as much as 26 points at 73-47 with 2:07 left on a layup by Chet Stachitas. Delaware fell to 0-25 all-time vs. Associated Press Top 25 teams, including a mark of 0-13 vs. Top 10 teams.
