January 24, 2004 Late-Game Heroics Come to an End as UNC Wilmington Edges Blue Hens in Defensive Struggle
Down 50-49 with 3.1 seconds left to play, Delaware sophomore guard Rulon Washington mishandled a pass that forced him to misfire on a 25-foot off-balance jumper at the buzzer, giving the Seahawks the victory in a defensive struggle. Delaware, coming off two straight wins over Old Dominion and William & Mary in which the Hens converted last-second three-pointers, fell to 10-7 (4-4 CAA) for the season despite a game-high 15 points from guard Mike Ames (at right) and eight points from Washington. Ames had hit a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left to down Old Dominion 64-62 Jan. 17 while Washington's three-pointer at the buzzer vs. William & Mary Jan. 21 sent the game into overtime and vaulted the Hens to a 93-82 victory. The Hens fell to 0-4 this season in conference road games. Ames also connected on three three-pointers, upping his career total to 203 and moving into second place all-time at Delaware, just eight shy of the record of 211 by Kestutis Marciulionis in 1996-2000. Herb Courtney pulled nine rebounds for the Hens while Raphael Madera added eight and Robin Wentt collected seven boards. UNC Wilmington, the two-time defending CAA champion, had a two-game losing streak snapped as Ed Spencer and Halston Lane each scored 10 points and Anthony Terrell added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Seahawks (10-7, 6-3 CAA) committed just four turnovers the entire game to offset 33.3 percent shooting (18 of 54) from the field "I thought we played great today," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, whose team fell to 0-4 in CAA road games this season. "This is a tough place to win and I'm proud of the way our guys battled throughout the game. Sure we made some mistakes today, but we put ourselves in a position to win this game. It just didn't go our way this time." Delaware, which committed 15 turnovers and shot just 34 percent from the field (16 of 47) itself, got a three-pointer from Washington just before the halftime buzzer to take a 27-26 lead into intermission and built the advantage to 36-29 on a basket by Wentt with 15:35 left as the Hens held the Seahawks to just two field goals over a 14-minute stretch. But just like that, UNC Wilmington bounced back, taking off on an 11-0 run to regain the lead and holding the Blue Hens scoreless for six minutes and 14 seconds until Ames hit a three-pointer with 9:21 left to cut the Seahawk margin to 40-39. The Hens never did regain the lead but pulled to within one point on a three-pointer by Washington at the 4:09 mark. UNC Wilmington's Andy Gunn answered with a free throw and Spencer hit a jumper with 49 seconds left to up the UNCW lead to 50-46. Wentt came up with a big play with 6.7 seconds remaining as he grabbed a rebound off a UD miss and was fouled by John Goldsberry as he converted the layup. Wentt followed with the free throw to cut the lead to 50-49. Goldsberry, who suffered through a tough 0 for 7 shooting day from the field, gave the Hens one last chance for the win when he missed the front end of a one and one free throw opportunity less than a second later. The Blue Hens called two timeouts to set up the last play, but Washington couldn't handle a cross-court pass from Wentt two feet beyond the three-point line and by the time he regained possession of the ball, his off-balance jumper just before the final buzzer was way off the mark. Delaware played the entire game without starting guard David Lunn, who was sick and did not make the trip, and the entire second half without starting forward Harding Nana, who suffered a strained shoulder in a collision while diving for a loose ball in the first half. Nana's status will be determined Sunday.

NC -- The late-game heroics for the University of
Delaware men's basketball team didn't continue Saturday
afternoon in a 50-49 Colonial Athletic Association setback
to host UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum, but the Blue Hens
certainly had the chance.
