Hens Hold Off
Seahawks at the End to Pick Up Key CAA

Harding Nana (at right) netted 14 points and
pulled a game-high 11 rebounds as the University of Delaware
held off UNC Wilmington for a key 62-61 Colonial Athletic
Association men's basketball victory Monday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Delaware led the entire
game, but never by more than eight points in the second
half, and didn't clinch the win until UNC Wilmington's John
Goldsberry threw an errant pass into the lane with one
second remaining. The victory gave Delaware (15-9, 9-6 CAA)
its seventh win in its last 10 outings and kept the Hens a
game ahead of the Seahawks in the CAA standings.
UNC Wilmington, which
defeated Delaware 50-49 back on Jan. 24 in Wilmington, NC,
had a two-game win streak snapped to fall to 12-12, 8-8 CAA.
Guard Ed Spencer was the only Seahawk in double figures with
11 points while Goldsberry added nine points and six assists
and Beckham Wyrick pulled a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Hens snapped a personal
six-game losing streak to the two-time defending CAA
champion Seahawks and downed UNC Wilmington for the first
time since Jan. 12, 2002.
Delaware continued its flare
for the dramatic as the game was the Hens' sixth in the last
nine outings not decided until the final seconds and the
ninth overall this season. Nine of the Hens' last 13 games
have been decided by five points or less or in overtime.
Nana, who was playing in
just his second game after missing five contests with a
shoulder injury suffered early in the first UNC Wilmington
game, hit on 6 of 10 shots from the field and led all
rebounders with 11 as he posted his second double-double of
the season. Delaware junior guard David Lunn came off
the bench to add 11 points and Mike Slattery added
six points while dishing out seven assists for the
Hens.
The Blue Hens led the entire
second half but the lead never got over six points until the
final seven minutes when Delaware upped the lead to eight
twice, going up 55-47 with 6:10 left on a layup by Nana and
up 57-49 on a dunk by Robin Wentt one minute
later.
But the Seahawks chipped
away at the lead, cutting the margin to two points at 57-55
with 2:25 remaining when Mitch Laue converted a layup. Nana
answered with a conventional three-point play to put the
lead back up to five at 60-55 with 1:48 remaining, but the
Seahawks made another push.
Goldsberry nailed a
three-pointer from the right wing to cut the lead to 60-58,
but Lunn answered with two free throws for the Hens with 54
seconds remaining to up the lead to 62-58. But UNCW cut the
lead to one for the first time since the game's opening
minute when Joel Justus netted a three-pointer with 48
seconds left to cut the lead to 62-61.
Delaware gained possession
and worked the clock down but came away empty when Mike
Ames missed on a three-pointer with 11 seconds left.
Anthony Terrell got the rebound and fed Goldsberry, who
raced down the right side of the floor to the right
baseline. But three Delaware defenders stepped in to stop
the drive and Goldsberry's weak pass into the middle of the
lane was stolen by Lunn just before the final buzzer.
