January 7, 2004 Rams Shoot 71 Percent from the Field in the First Half on the Way to CAA Win RICHMOND, VA - Host Virginia Commonwealth shot a blistering 67 percent from the field for the game, including 71 percent in the first half, as the Rams made quick work of the University of Delaware in a 99-72 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Siegel Center. Center Troy Godwin led five scorers in double figures with 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field, Domonic Jones added 19 points and eight rebounds, and Nick George was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field and finished with a career-high 17 points for the Rams, who improved to 8-4 (2-1 CAA) on the season and 3-0 all-time vs. Delaware at the Siegel Center. The Rams, who finished the night hitting 37 of 55 shots from the field, including 7 of 10 from the three-point line, were coming off a 66-61 loss to Hofstra Monday night, a team the Hens had defeated at the Bob Carpenter Center 66-59 this past Saturday. The Hens, who suffered their worst loss since an 84-57 setback to Saint Joseph's Nov. 28, 2001 and their biggest setback in terms of losing margin in three seasons in the CAA, fell to 7-4, 1-1 CAA. The 99 points were the most allowed by the Blue Hens since a 113-111 overtime loss to New Hampshire Feb. 26, 1995. Mike Ames hit on 7 of 11 shots from the field and finished with a team-high 19 points while David Lunn added 17 points and Mike Slattery contributed 11 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Harding Nana added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Hens. "Our defense was non-existent tonight," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, who coached his 100th career game for the Blue Hens. "We started out allowing some easy baskets and then the basket became an ocean for VCU and they couldn't miss. This was the worst a team of mine has ever played. We were flat and I don't have an explanation. I can tell you we will play better defense on Saturday (at Towson)." The teams played to a 5-5 tie in the first two minutes of the game before VCU caught fire. The Rams followed with an 18-1 run in which they converted on 8 of 11 shots from the field and went up 23-6 on a three-pointer by Godwin with 12:54 remaining. The Rams ended the first half with a 56-38 advantage, the most points scored in the first half against Delaware since Navy, led by David Robinson, hit for 59 Jan. 20, 1986. For the half, the Rams shot a blistering 71 percent, hitting on 22 of 31 shots from the field, including 5 of 7 from beyond the three-point line. Delaware, which shot a respectable 43.3 percent from the field for the game (26 of 60), slowly trimmed the lead in the second half, cutting the margin to four points twice in the first 10 minutes and getting it to 13 points at 74-61 on a jumper by Ames. But VCU's Derrick Reid (career-high 15 points) followed with two quick baskets and Godwin converted a three-point play to up the lead back up to 20 points and the Hens never threatened again.
