Virginia Commonwealth 71, Delaware 69 (2ot) February 25, 2004 George's Tip-In Just Before Buzzer Helps VCU Stun Blue Hens Complete Statistics NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward Nick George tipped-in a missed three-point attempt just before the final buzzer as league-leading Virginia Commonwealth stunned the University of Delaware 71-69 in double overtime in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware's Rulon Washington, who sent the game into the second extra session with a three-pointer in the final minute of the first overtime, deadlocked the game once again with a three-pointer with nine seconds left in the final period. Virginia Commonwealth then raced down the court with Derrick Reid launching a three-pointer from the left corner. The ball bounced off the front of the rim but George was there to tip the ball in just before the final buzzer sounded. The officials reviewed the replay on a courtside monitor for several minutes before declaring the basket good, setting off a celebration by the Rams. The basket capped a wild game as the Hens (15-11, 9-8 CAA) rallied from a seven-point deficit with nine minutes left in regulation to take the lead, only to see the game go into overtime when VCU guard Domonic Jones, who scored a team-high 21 points, sent the game into an extra session with a layup with six seconds left. The Hens had the chance to win the game in regulation but Washington missed two three-pointers in the final four seconds, knotting the score at 55-55. Jones added seven rebounds for the Rams (19-7, 13-4 CAA), who swept the season series vs. the Hens and stayed in a tie for first place in the CAA standings with Drexel with one regular season game left to go. Troy Godwin added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Rams before fouling out while George hit on 7 of 9 shots from the field and finished with 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Delaware guard Mike Slattery (at right), who gave Delaware a 55-53 lead in the closing seconds of the second half with two free throws, finished with a career-high 24 points and dished out nine assists while Harding Nana added 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double, and Washington came off the bench to add 12 more points. The loss snapped a streak of six straight wins for Delaware in double overtime games and was the Hens' fourth game this season that went into overtime. "It was a bittersweet game," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, whose team has had 10 games decided by three points or less this season. "I am proud of the way we played tonight. We put ourselves in position and a couple of mistakes down the stretch cost us, like the (missed) block out on the last play of the game. We missed a lot of shots that I'd like to have back." VCU led most of the first overtime session and went up by six points at 63-57 on a free throw by Godwin with 2:42 remaining. Delaware's Nana followed with a layup to cut the lead to four and Washington followed with a three-pointer with 1:24 remaining to pull the Hens to within 63-62. Jones followed with a jumper to put VCU up 65-62, but Washington struck again from long range just 17 seconds later with a three-pointer that tied the game at 65-65. Jones' three-pointer from top of the key just before the buzzer missed, sending the game into a second overtime session. The Rams led the entire second overtime period as they sandwiched baskets by Godwin and Jones around a single free throw by Delaware's Robin Wentt to go up 69-66 with 1:47 remaining. Reid missed two free throws with 31 seconds left to give the Hens a chance to tie and they took advantage. Washington missed a three-pointer but Nana rebounded and fed him again for another three-attempt which was good, knotting the score at 69-69 with nine seconds left. VCU then answered loudly with George's game-winner.
