Blue Hens Drop Opener at San Juan Shootout as Auburn Posts 74-46 Win

Date: December 20, 2004

CAROLINA, PUERTO RICO -- Nathan Watson led three players in double figures with 19 points and knocked down five three-pointers as Auburn broke open a close game in the final six minutes and posted an easy 74-46 men's basketball win over the University of Delaware in the opening round of the San Juan Shootout at Guillermo Angulo Coliseum Monday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (4-4), who had a two-game win streak snapped, played without senior point guard Mike Slattery (broken thumb) and shot just 34 percent from the field while committing a season-high 26 turnovers. The Hens, who hit just 1 of 14 three-pointers for the game and converted just 13 of 23 free throws, posted their lowest point output of the season.

Junior guard Rulon Washington (right), who played all 40 minutes in making his first career start in place of Slattery, led the Hens with 12 points and five rebounds while center Raphael Madera came off the bench to score a season-high 10 points and add five rebounds and Harding Nana, who was averaging 20 points per game over his last four contests, added nine points and eight rebounds but committed eight turnovers. Delaware did control the boards, outrebounding Auburn 41-27 and grabbing 18 rebounds on the offensive end.

The Blue Hens will continue their three-game swing at the tournament as they take on Toledo Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. and close out the event Wednesday at 10 a.m. vs. Middle Tennessee. Middle Tennessee downed Toledo 70-65 in the tournament opener earlier Monday.

Auburn (7-3), a member of the powerful Southeast Conference, entered the game having lost three of its last four games but turned things around as the Tigers got a balanced scoring effort and knocked down 9 of 23 three-point attempts. Watson led the way with his 19 points while Quinnel Brown added 18 points and Toney Douglass chipped in with 13 points.

"We couldn't afford to play like we did against a team of this calibre," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "We were rushing shots inside and just didn't concentrate. We did a good job on the boards but we couldn't convert on some of the easy chances and that let Auburn get into their transition game. They created some confusion, moved the ball around, and got some good shots and knocked them down. We just need to get ready for tomorrow."

Delaware trailed just 31-25 at halftime and pulled to within 31-27 in the first minute of the second half. But Auburn took off on a 13-3 run to take control and up the lead to 44-30 midway through the stanza. The Blue Hens hung tough and pulled to within 11 points at 51-40 with 6:37 remaining, but Auburn took off another tear, scoring the next 10 points to put the game away at 61-40 and got several easy baskets in transition the rest of the way for the 28-point win.
