DE -- Junior forward Harding Nana (#1 at
right) posted game-highs of 21 points and
12 rebounds as the University of Delaware
held off rival Drexel for a 67-65 men's
basketball victory in the Colonial
Athletic Association opener for both teams
Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Delaware
(3-3, 1-0 CAA) snapped a two-game losing
streak as the Blue Hens held Drexel to
just 6 of 26 shooting from the field in
the second half but didn't clinch the win
until Dragon guard Bashir Mason missed a
layup under pressure with one second left
to end the game.
Drexel
(2-3, 0-1 CAA), coming off a 57-49 win
over 2003 NCAA quarterfinalist Saint
Joseph's Saturday, got 16 points from
forward Danny Hinds, 14 points from Phil
Goss, and 11 points from guard Jeremiah
King. After hitting 16 of 31 shots from
the field in the opening half (.516) to
take a 38-36 lead, Drexel managed to
connect on just 6 of 26 shots (.231) in
the second half.
The
Blue Hens, who now hold a slim all-time
advantage of 67-62 in this fierce rivalry,
also got 15 points from guard Andrew
Washington while Rulon Washington came off
the bench to add 10 points, including two
three-pointers, and Mike Slattery dished
out a game-high eight assists. Delaware
held a slight 39-34 advantage on the
boards and shot 47.3 percent from the
field (26 of 55) for the game.
The
first half featured five ties but Delaware
took a five-point lead at 36-31 after two
free throws by Rulon Washington with 2:31
left before Drexel rallied to take the
two-point halftime advantage. Kenell
Sanchez and Mason hit baskets and Hinds
nailed a three-pointer with 1:08 left as
the Dragons closed on a 7-0 run. Nana
scored 15 of his 21 points in the first
half to pace Delaware.
After
five ties in the first six minutes of the
second half, the Hens took control as
Andrew Washington hit a three-pointer and
a layup around two Calvin Smith free
throws to give Delaware a 54-47 edge with
11:50 remaining for its biggest lead of
the night.
But
Drexel paired the lead down over the next
five minutes and tied it again at 57-57 on
a free throw by Chaz Crawford (nine
points, team-high eight rebounds) with
6:23 left. The Hen answered with a big run
again as Nana hit two jumpers and Lebo
Maepa converted another for a 63-57 lead
with 4:28 remaining.
Delaware
would hold the lead the rest of the game,
but it wasn't easy. Drexel's Mason hit two
free throws and Goss nailed a
three-pointer to cut the lead to one at
63-62 but Nana hit two free throws of his
own and Rulon Washington added another two
from the line to up the lead to five at
67-62 with 19 seconds left. Goss hit
another three-pointer seven seconds later
to cut the lead to two and the Hens gave
Drexel one last chance when Rulon
Washington missed a free throw with 10
seconds left. The Dragons had the chance
to tie but Mason's shot underneath missed
the mark and Sanchez rebounded but had no
time to get a shot off.
