Washington Nails Late Three-Pointer as
Delaware Downs George Mason 81-78 in
Overtime Thriller

nailed a three-pointer from the corner
with one second left in overtime as the
University of Delaware pulled out a 81-78
victory over George Mason in a Colonial
Athletic Association men's basketball
thriller Wednesday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Washington
was one of five Blue Hen starters in
double figures with 14 points while
Harding Nana posted his seventh straight
double-double with 20 points and 12
rebounds, Mike Slattery added 15 points
and eight assists, Robin Wentt scored 12
points and pulled 10 rebounds, and Andrew
Washington chipped in with 16 points.
Nana
scored 20 or more points for the fifth
straight game while Slattery moved into
seventh place on the all-time CAA assists
list with 508. The Hens put five scores in
double figures for the first time since
Feb. 13, 2003 vs. James Madison.
The Blue
Hens (6-9, 3-1 CAA) won for the second
straight game following a six-game losing
streak while George Mason, the CAA
runner-up a year ago, fell to 7-6, 2-2
CAA. Lamar Butler led the Patriots with 19
points while Jai Lewis added 16 points and
eight rebounds and Tony Skinn added 14
points. The loss kept George Mason head
coach Jim Larranaga from becoming the
Patriot's all-time winningest
coach.
Nana gave
the Blue Hens a 76-73 lead early in
overtime before George Mason came back to
take the lead as Skinn hit a free throw
and Lewis followed with two free throws
and later scored a layup with 1:35 left
for a 78-76 GMU lead. Nana followed with
two free throws with 44 seconds left to
tie the score again at 78-78 to set up the
thrilling final. Wentt forced Lewis to
miss a shot inside with 28 seconds left,
giving Delaware a last chance to win.
After
moving the clock down to the final
seconds, Slattery drove the lane and
dished to Washington in the corner for the
game-winning shot. George Mason could do
no better than a desperation halfcourt
shot at the buzzer that was never close.
George
Mason led for most of the first half and
took a 34-33 lead into halftime and a
hard-fought second half featured six ties
and seven lead changes before the extra
session. The Hens took sole possession of
the lead for the first time in the second
half when Andrew Washington converted a
conventional three-point play with 10:42
left for a 50-49 lead.
George
Mason tied the game again at 61-61 with
4:21 left on a jumper by Skinn but
Delaware came back with what appeared to
be a game-clinching run. The Hens reeled
off eight straight points over the next
two minutes, led by six points from Nana,
to go up 69-61 with 2:22 left, but the
Patriots wouldn't yield.
George
Mason scored eight straight points of its
own, tying the score at 69-69 with 1:13
left on a three-point play by John
Vaughan. Wentt's dunk gave the Hens a
71-69 lead with 51 seconds left, but Skinn
came right back and fed Lewis for a layup
with 37 seconds left to knot the score at
71-71. Both teams had the chance to win
the final seconds but Delaware was called
for a shot clock violation with four
seconds left and Skinn's running jumper in
the lane at the buzzer was off the mark.
