Blue Hens Close Out San Juan Shootout with 73-69 Overtime Loss to Middle Tennessee

Date: December 22, 2004

CAROLINA, PUERTO RICO -- Andrew Washington (right) sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer and the University of Delaware held a one-point lead in the final minute of the extra session before falling to Middle Tennessee State 73-69 in the final round of the San Juan Shootout Wednesday morning at Angulo Coliseum.

Middle Tennessee guard Mike Dean hit a three-pointer with 37 seconds left in overtime to put the Blue Raiders up for good at 71-69 and Marcus Morrison added two free throws 20 seconds later for the win. Delaware never got the chance to come back as the Blue Hens turned the ball over twice in the final 10 seconds.

Delaware, which went 0-3 for the tournament but came back after suffering a 28-point loss to Auburn Monday and a 26-point setback to Toledo Tuesday, fell to 4-6 on the season. Washington led the Blue Hens with a game-high 25 points and five assists while Harding Nana notched his fifth double-double in the last six games with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Rulon Washington also chipped in with 14 points and three assists.

After committing 54 turnovers in their first two games of the tournament, the Hens cut their turnover total down to 19 and held a 37-29 rebounding advantage over a MTSU team that entered the game with a +10 rebounding margin over opponents this season.

Middle Tennessee, the pre-season favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference, bounced back from a close loss to Auburn Tuesday to improve to 7-3. Michael Cuffee led the Blue Raiders with 16 points and six rebounds while Dean added 14 points, Morrison chipped in with 12, and Steve Thomas added 11 points.

"We did a good job today but we still made some mistakes and unfortunately most of them were critical errors down the stretch," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, whose team will return to action Dec. 29 at home vs. UMBC. "We got in a position to win the game but I feel bad for our kids. We just did some things near the end to give the game away. We've been through a lot but we have to bounce back. Our kids haven't put their heads down. I know they'll come back and make their mark."

The Blue Hens, who never held the lead the previous two days, jumped out to a quick lead this time and took a 31-24 advantage into intermission as Rulon Washington hit three three-pointers to lead the way. Another quick start in the second half gave the Hens their biggest lead of the day at 39-27 two minutes into the stanza, but MTSU quickly recovered, using a 19-6 run to take a 46-45 lead with 10:03 left in regulation.

Middle Tennessee stayed in front the rest of the way and still led by five points at 58-53 before Nana hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two with 1:55 left. Nana later hit two free throws with 41 seconds left to pull UD to within two at 60-58 but the Blue Raiders upped the lead again when Morrison hit one free throw. Delaware came back to send the game into overtime as Washington took a pass at the top of the key and buried a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Both teams traded the lead in overtime with MTSU going up 68-66 on a three-point play by Cuffee with 1:17 left. But Delaware came back as Rulon Washington hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to one and Nana gave the Hens their last lead when he intercepted a pass at midcourt and went in for the layup with 52 seconds left for a 69-68 UD advantage. But Dean came right back with the game-clinching three-pointer and Morrison put the Blue Raiders up 73-69 with two free throws with 17.4 seconds left. Delaware never got another shot as the Hens turned the ball in each of their next two possessions.
