Hens Rally From 10-Point Halftime Deficit
to Edge Rider 68-66

NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware battled
back from a 10-point halftime deficit to
take the lead midway through the second
half then had to hold on as Rider missed
two chances to win the game in the final
seconds for a 68-66 non-league men's
basketball victory Saturday night at the
Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware
(4-3) won its second straight game and
ended a personal three-game losing streak
to Rider as forward Harding Nana (right)
recorded his third straight double-double
with 19 points and 12 rebounds, guard
Rulon Washington came off the bench to
spark the Hens by hitting five
three-pointers and scoring 14 of his
season-high 19 points in the second half,
and Andrew Washington added 17 points.
Senior guard Mike Slattery, who injured
his wrist in the first half, did not
attempt a shot but dished out a game-high
nine assists and pulled six rebounds.
The
Blue Hens played the game as part of Retro
Night at the BCC, wearing replica jerseys
from the 1950's.
Rider
(4-3), which lost its second straight game
following a four-game win streak, got 16
points off the bench from Jason Thompson
and 12 points from forward Edwin Muniz and
had the chance to win the game several
times in the final seconds but couldn't
come through, misfiring on four
three-point attempts in the final 21
seconds, including two in the final two
seconds, that would have won the game.
Delaware
outscored Rider 38-26 in the second half
and used 65 percent shooting from the
field (13-20) to rally back and win the
game. The Hens also hit on 6 of 11 second
half three-point attempts. Rider shot just
37 percent from the field in the second
half (10 of 27) and was just 2 of 14 from
beyond the three-point line in the second
stanza.
Rider
came out of the gates quickly, taking a
7-0 lead in the first four minutes as the
Hens missed their first five shots and
committed three turnovers during the span.
Delaware chipped away and eventually tied
the game at 15-15 but the Broncs came
right back to take the lead, finishing the
half on an 11-4 spurt to take a 40-30
advantage into intermission.
A
quick second half start got the Hens back
in the game as Rulon Washington hit two
three-pointers in the first five minutes,
the second which tied the score at 43-43
and gave Delaware its first share of the
lead since the 12:06 mark of the opening
half.
Rider
regained the lead at 49-46 on a jumper by
Thompson with 13:15 left but Nana answered
right back with a three-pointer for
Delaware to knot the score at 49-49 with
13 minutes left. Rider never regained the
lead but did tie the score three more
times, the final time at 66-66 with 1:36
remaining.
The
Hens took the lead for good on Nana's
layup with 1:13 remaining, which turned
out to be the last points of the game.
Rider
did have its chances. Jerry Johnson, who
had cut the lead to 66-64 with a
three-pointer with 2:31 left, missed a
three-point attempt for the lead with 1:00
remaining, Muniz missed with 27 seconds
remaining, Terrance Mouton missed with
seven seconds left and again with two
seconds left when his attempt was blocked
out of bounds by Calvin Smith. Rider had
one last chance but Jerry's Johnson's
three-pointer from the side was short as
the buzzer sounded.
