Delaware's Slattery, Malcom on Watch List for National Basketball Awards

DATE: February 22, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- University of Delaware senior basketball standouts Mike Slattery (right) and Tiara Malcom have each been named to the "Watch Lists" for the third annual Collegiate Basketball Award of Excellence presented by Creamland Dairies.

Slattery, a 5-11 guard from Philadelphia, PA (Germantown Academy), is one of 25 players on the men's list while Malcom, a 6-1 forward from Wilmington, DE (Caravel), is one of 36 players on the women's list. Delaware is one of only nine NCAA Division I schools nationally to have both a men's and women's player on the watch list.

The award honors college seniors for their athletic and academic achievement as well as their community involvement. The award will be presented at the end of the 2004-05 basketball season on April 12 at the Albuquerque Marriott in Albuquerque, NM. The nominees will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists on March 1 and three finalists will then be named during the NCAA basketball tournaments.

A four-year starter at point guard Slattery current averages 9.2 points per game and leads the Colonial Athletic Association and ranks 12th in NCAA I in assists per game with 6.7 despite missing five games earlier this season with a broken thumb. A two-time All-CAA selection who has led the league in assists each of the last two seasons, has dished out 588 career assists to rank No. 2 all-time at Delaware and No. 4 all-time in CAA history.

He also needs just 30 points to reach 1,000 all-time in his career and could become the first player in CAA history to reach both 1,000 points and 600 assists in a career. A sport management major who has been active with Special Olympics, he was a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District 2 All-Academic selection last season and is a candidate again this year.

Malcom, the pre-season CAA Player of the Year and a two-time second team All-CAA selection, currently leads Delaware in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg) and has led the Hens to a 20-4 record, a 17-game winning streak, and a first place standing in the league at 12-1. A four-time CAA Player of the Week, she has recorded three double-doubles this season and has scored 20 or more points five times.

She ranks seventh on Delaware's all-time scoring list with 1,396 points and needs just 36 more free throws to become the all-time career leader in CAA history. She is majoring in family and community services with a concentration in families at-risk. She has been active with the Greater Newark Boys and Girls Club and is a two-time CAA Dean Ehlers Leadership Award nominee.
