Delaware Opens California Swing with 67-58 Setback to St. Mary's

Date: December 2, 2004

MORAGA, CA -- St. Mary's closed the first half on a 14-3 run and the University of Delaware could never recover as the Blue Hens opened up their two-game California swing with a 67-58 non-league men's basketball loss Thursday night at the McKeon Pavilion.

The Hens, playing in California for the first time since a 1994 trip to the University of California Santa Barbara Tournament, did end the game on an 18-4 run but it wasn't enough as Delaware (2-2) had a two-game win streak snapped. Junior forward Harding Nana hit on 9 of 13 shots from the field and finished with 21 points and five rebounds to pace the Hens.

Mike Slattery, Raphael Madera, and Rulon Washington all chipped in with seven points for the Blue Hens with Slattery adding five assists, good enough to move him into 10th place on the all-time Colonial Athletic Association charts with 457.

St. Mary's, a member of the West Coast Conference, got 19 points and five three-pointers from guard E.J. Rowland to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Gaels also got 14 points from forward Daniel Kickert and 11 points and nine rebounds from center Frederic Adjiwanou. Rowland hit on 5 of 9 shots from beyond the three-point arc after entering the season hitting just 5 of 17.

"This was a game of runs and late in the first half we committed too many turnovers," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "They did a good job on capitalizing on those mistakes. However, we played much better in the second half and I saw some positive things that we can build upon."

Delaware trailed by just three points at 28-25 with 6:13 left in the first half but the Gaels exploded on a 14-3 run to end the half and took a 42-28 lead into intermission. St. Mary's continued the momentum to begin the second half as well, outscoring the Blue Hens 21-12 to up the lead to 63-40.

The Blue Hens, who connected on just 2 of 11 shots from beyond the three-point line for the game, never got closer than 10 points until their final basket as they finished the game with an 18-4 run.

The Blue Hens will return to action Saturday night when they take on the Dons of the University of San Francisco at 10 a.m. Eastern time.
