Turnovers
Plague Hens Again in 81-58 Loss to Toledo
at San Juan Shootout
Date:
December 21, 2004
CAROLINA,
PUERTO RICO -- Turnovers continued
to plague the University of Delaware men's
basketball team as the Blue Hens committed
28 of them and dropped an 81-58 verdict to
the University of Toledo in the second
round of the San Juan Shootout Tuesday
morning at Guillermo Angulo Coliseum.
The Hens,
who committed 26 miscues in Monday's
opening 74-46 loss to Auburn, fell to 4-5
but received outstanding efforts from
junior forward Harding Nana and sophomore
center Raphael Madera. Nana recorded a
career-high 30 points and pulled 11
rebounds for his fourth double-double in
the last five games. Madera came off the
bench to match a career-high with 16
points and pulled four rebounds in just 24
minutes of action. Nana, who converted 10
of 13 shots from the field, became the
first UD player to hit the 30-point mark
since Mike Ames recorded 30 vs. Drexel
this past Jan. 15.
No other
Delaware player scored more than six
points although Andrew Washington had six
points, six rebounds, and four assists and
Calvin Smith dished out six assists. The
Hens hit on 20 of 41 shots from the field
and held a 32-29 advantage on the boards
but couldn't overcome the turnovers. The
Hens, playing without senior starting
point guard Mike Slattery who is out for
three weeks with a broken thumb, committed
their highest turnover total since
registering 28 turnovers in an 82-80
overtime win over Delaware State Nov. 26,
1994.
Toledo,
one of the pre-season favorites in the
Mid-American Conference and a team that
entered the game with the eighth toughest
schedule in NCAA Division I, improved to
2-5 after falling to Middle Tennessee
70-65 in its San Juan opener Monday.
Koenta Howell came off the bench to score
15 points while Sammy Villegas added 14
points and MAC Pre-Season Player of the
Year Keith Triplett added 10 points. The
Rockets scored 41 points off Delaware
turnovers for the game.
"This is
the thing I feared coming into the
tournament," said Delaware head coach
David Henderson, whose team will close out
the three-game tournament Wednesday
morning at 10 a.m. vs. Middle Tennessee
State. "We just didn't take care of the
ball and they were converting off those
turnovers. It's frustrating because teams
are going to try to take advantage of it
and put the pressure on us. We just have
to stay together and get through this
adversity. Things are going to get better
for us, we just have to turn that corner
sooner than later."
Despite
falling behind 7-0 early, Delaware battled
back in the first half to make it a game.
Taking advantage of 19 first half Delaware
turnovers, Toledo took a 24-11 lead with
8:44 left in the opening half. But Nana
caught fire for the Hens and scored nine
points himself in a 12-0 run that pulled
Delaware to within 24-23 with 6:11
remaining. But the Rockets came right back
with a 10-0 run of their own and
eventually took a 41-27 lead into
halftime. Another 11-0 run to start the
second half by Toledo upped the margin to
an insurmountable 52-27 advantage three
minutes into the second half. Delaware
never cut the margin lower than 20 points
the rest of the way.
