Pulls Away Late to Hand Delaware Fourth

-- UMBC freshman guard Brian Hodges came
off the bench to score a team-high 16
points and connect on four three pointers,
including two big ones in the final seven
minutes of the game, as the Retrievers
handed host University of Delaware a 66-56
setback in non-league men's basketball
action Wednesday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
The Blue
Hens, playing for the first time in 10
days, dropped their fourth straight game
to fall to 4-7, the team's worst start
since the 1990-91 season. Delaware has now
lost four straight for the first time
since February, 2002.
UMBC,
which defeated Delaware in Newark for the
first time ever and won for just the
second time in nine meetings overall vs.
the Blue Hens, won its third straight as
Hodges led four scorers in double figures.
Andrew Feeley added 13 points and eight
rebounds while John Zito chipped in with
11 points and eight rebounds, and Cory
McJimson added 11 points and four assists.
Rob Gogerty dished out eight assists and
scored eight points.
Delaware,
which suffered its first home loss in four
outings this season, got game-highs of 25
points and 11 rebounds from forward
Harding Nana (at right), who recorded his
sixth double-double in the last seven
games. Guard Andrew Washington added 13
points but hit on just 2 of 13 shots from
the field. The Hens converted just 18 of
51 shots from the field for the game
(.353) and were just 6 of 24 from beyond
the three-point line.
Delaware
fell behind early as the Hens shot just
31.8 percent from the field in the first
half (7 of 22) and trailed 26-19 at the
break. The Hens trailed by 11 at one point
when Zito hit a free throw with 1:52 left
for a 26-15 UMBC advantage.
The Blue
Hens fought hard to get back in the game
in the second half, pulling to within one
point twice at 31-30 with 16:07 left on a
jumper by Nana and to within 39-38 with
11:39 on two free throws by Washington.
The comeback finally culminated with the
Hens getting their first lead of the night
at 41-39 with 10:46 left when Washington
nailed a three-pointer following a UMBC
turnover.
Delaware
held its final lead at 46-44 when Nana
nailed a three-pointer with 8:25
remaining. McJimson came back to tie the
score at 46-46 on a jumper with 7:10
remaining and Hodges nailed a big
three-pointer 39 seconds later as part of
a 7-0 UMBC run. Delaware managed to cut
the lead back to three on a free throw by
Raphael Madera with 3:40 remaining, but
Hodges struck again as he started a
game-clinching 8-0 run with another
three-pointer just 20 seconds later.
