Comeback to Down Hens

-- The University of Delaware men's
basketball squad rallied back from an
11-point deficit in the second half with a
late-game flurry but came up just short in
a 62-59 Colonial Athletic Association
men's basketball setback to UNC Wilmington
Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Delaware
(7-13, 4-5 CAA), which suffered its fourth
straight loss, scored 10 points in the
final 47 seconds to trim the lead to one
but the Seahawks hit four free throws in
the final 10 seconds to escape with the
victory.
Guard
Andrew Washington came off the bench to
lead Delaware with 20 points while Mike
Slattery added 12 points, including a
layup that cut the lead to two with 11
seconds left, and dealt four assists. The
Blue Hens couldn't overcome 17 turnovers
and a tough shooting night that saw them
hit just 39.2 percent of their shots from
the field, including just 8 of 22
three-point attempts. Junior forward
Harding Nana, the CAA's leading scorer
(19.9 ppg) and rebounder (10.3 rpg), was
held to just eight points and seven
rebounds and had a streak of 11 straight
double-figure scoring efforts snapped.
UNC
Wilmington (12-6, 7-2 CAA), which took
over sole possession of second place in
the CAA with its second straight win, got
a team-high 14 points from guard T.J.
Carter while forward Beckham Wyrick scored
eight points and pulled a career-high 14
rebounds. Vladmir Kuljanin and Halston
Lane each added nine points with Lane
converting six of eight free throws in the
final 1:33 for the Seahawks. UNC
Wilmington overcame a tough shooting night
itself as the Seahawks hit 37.9 percent
(22 of 58) from the field.
UNC
Wilmington, which improved to 7-2 all-time
vs. Delaware, led the entire first half
and took a 31-23 lead into intermission
thanks to a 10-0 run after the Blue Hens
had cut the lead to 17-16 with 9:10
remaining. The Seahawks then held Delaware
scoreless for the next six minutes and
took the eight-point halftime lead.
The
Seahawks built the second half lead to as
much as 12 points early and still led by
11 points at 41-30 with 9:47 remaining on
a jumper by Wyrick. The Blue Hens
converted just 2 of their first 11 shots
from the field and went nearly nine
minutes without a field goal before
Slattery hit consecutive three-pointers,
Andrew Washington nailed a three, and Nana
converted from beyond the arc with 6:19
left to cut the lead to 46-42.
But UNC
Wilmington fought the Hens off and never
allowed Delaware to cut the lead to less
than four until Slattery hit a driving
layup with 11 seconds left to cut the
margin to 58-56. Halston came back to hit
two free throws to up the margin back to
four points at 60-56 with eight seconds
left before Delaware's Rulon Washington
hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to
60-59 with three seconds remaining.
The
Seahawks then iced the game as Carter hit
two free throws and Slattery's desperation
shot from mid-court bounced high off the
backboard.
