Harding Nana exploded for 29 points and
hit six three-pointers, but Virginia
Commonwealth built a big halftime lead and
held on down the stretch to post a 66-57
Colonial Athletic Association men's
basketball victory over the host Blue Hens
Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Virginia
Commonwealth, the defending CAA champion,
improved to 8-7 (4-2 CAA) and used a
balanced effort to pick up the win as
guard B.A. Walker scored 15 of his
team-high 21 points in the first half,
forward Nick George scored 16 points and
pulled a team-high nine rebounds, and
Michael Doles chipped in with 15 points.
Delaware
(7-10, 4-2 CAA), which had a three-game
win streak snapped, spoiled an outstanding
effort by Nana, who entered the game as
the leading scorer (19.7 ppg) and
rebounder (10.4) in the league. Nana hit
on 11 of 22 shots from the field,
including a career-high six
three-pointers, to finish with a game-high
29 points, just one shy of his
career-high. The 29 points marked his
ninth straight double figure scoring
effort. Blue Hen guard Mike Slattery added
13 points and dished out eight assists
while guard Andrew Washington pulled down
a team-high nine rebounds and dished out
four assists.
The Hens
suffered just their second home CAA loss
in the last two years (12-2) with both
setbacks coming at the hands of
VCU.
The Rams
used a 19-0 run and held Delaware
scoreless for nearly eight minutes in the
first half to take a 36-28 lead at
intermission. Delaware jumped out to an
8-3 lead three minutes into the game but
didn't score again until the 9:43 mark
when Raphael Madera scored inside to cut
the VCU lead to 22-10. The Rams outscored
Delaware 19-0 during the stretch with
George scoring six points and Walker
adding five during the run.
Virginia
Commonwealth held the Hens at bay through
the first half of the second stanza and
upped the lead to 16 points at 52-36 with
10:30 left when Renardo Dixon capped a 6-0
run with a layup off a steal.
Fueled by
Nana's 17 second half points, the Hens
posted a furious comeback to get back in
the game. Nana scored 10 points in a span
of 4:14 and capped a 16-2 run with a
jumper to cut the VCU lead to 54-52 with
4:30 left. But that would be as close as
the Hens would get.
The Rams
gained some breathing room as Doles scored
five straight points to up the lead to
seven, but the Hens followed with two free
throws by Washington to cut the lead to
59-56 with two minutes left. The Rams then
clinched things as George answered with a
three-pointer with 41 seconds left and
added two free throws 11 seconds later to
put the game away.
