Cannon Leads Delaware Men’s Basketball To 89-56 Exhibition Win Over Goldey-Beacom

NEWARK, DE -- Junior Calvin Cannon (right) scored 25 points while hitting 7-of-8 three-point attempts in his first career game as a Blue Hen to lead the University of Delaware men’s basketball team to an 89-56 victory over Goldey-Beacom in an exhibition game Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Cannon, who transferred to Delaware after playing the last two seasons at Palm Beach Community College (FL), hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor and added two steals while playing a game-high 27 minutes. Senior forward Harding Nana, who tied for eighth in Division I with 19 double-doubles a year ago, scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high 13 boards.

Senior Andrew Washington added 16 points and connected on 6-of-7 shots from the field, while freshman Zaire Taylor scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Blue Hens. Derek Savage scored 11 points to lead the Lightning, while DJ Stanberry added nine.

Delaware, coming off an 11-20 season, jumped out to an 11-0 lead four minutes into the game, and after Goldey-Beacom pulled within 17-11, went on a 9-2 spurt to go up 26-13 with 8:40 left in the half. The Lightning got within 32-22 with 2:55 left in the half, but the Blue Hens closed the period on another 9-2 run to take a 41-24 lead at the break.

After Goldey-Beacom scored the first two points of the second half the Blue Hens steadily built their advantage, as Delaware did not lead by less than 17 the rest of the way. The Blue Hens went up by as much as 35 at 82-47 with 3:39 remaining and again with under a minute remaining.

Junior Raphael Madera scored nine points and added seven rebounds for Delaware, which held a 44-30 rebounding advantage and shot 50 percent from the field.

The exhibition game was the only one of the preseason for the Blue Hens, who open their regular season on Friday, November 18 against The Citadel on the first day of the Hispanic College Fund Classic in Raleigh, NC.
