NEWARK, DE -- Senior guard Andre Collins, the nation’s fifth leading scorer at 24.3 points per game, erupted for a career-high 36 points as Loyola stormed past the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon, handing the cold-shooting Blue Hens a 99-86 setback in non-conference men’s basketball action at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Collins, a first-year transfer from the University of Maryland who was coming off a 34-point performance in an 87-79 win over VMI Thursday night, connected on 13 of 24 shots from the field Saturday, including five three-pointers, and also dished out a game-high eight assists to lead the Greyhounds (7-2) to their second straight win. Loyola downed Delaware for just the second time in 11 all-time meetings and won at the BCC for the first time in four tries.
Collins’ 36 points was the highest total ever scored against Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center and the second highest scoring performance in the building’s 14-year history. Matt Alosa of New Hampshire scored 39 points in an America East playoff game vs. Hartford on March 1, 1996. The 36 points was also the highest total scored against Delaware since Matt Johnson of Vermont dropped 42 points on Feb. 16, 1991. The 99 points scored by Loyola was also the highest team point total allowed by Delaware in BCC history.
The hot-shooting Greyhounds hit 62.5 percent from the field field (35 of 56), converting 19 of 28 shots in the second half, to cruise to the win. Loyola also connected on 23 of 27 shots from the foul line. Guard Shane James added 24 points and six assists for Loyola while center Hassan Fofana added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Delaware (4-7), which had a two-game win streak snapped, suffered tough shooting night, hitting just 28 of 75 shots from the field for the game (37.3 percent) and just 17 of 30 shots from the foul line. The Hens missed 16 straight shots at one point in the first half and missed 19 of their final 20 attempts to close out the half and headed into the lockerroom down 37-31.
Blue Hen guard Calvin Cannon (above) scored a career-high 22 points to lead four Delaware scorers in double figures. Zaire Taylor added 16 points, Andrew Washington chipped in with 13, and All-American candidate Harding Nana added 12 points and 10 rebounds despite shooting just 3 of 19 from the field and missing all seven of his three-point attempts. The Hens did connect on a season-high 13 three-pointers and committed just nine turnovers in the loss.
Delaware led by as much as six points in the first half at 26-20 with 9:15 left before hitting a cold snap. The Blue Hens missed 16 straight shots from the field over the next seven minutes while the Greyhounds embarked on a 15-1 run to take control at 35-27. Collins scored eight of his points during the run.
After Delaware cut Loyola’s six-point halftime lead to four at 41-37 with 16:30 left to play, Loyola stormed back with a pivotal run, outscoring the Hens 19-6 over the next 4:21 to take a commanding 60-43 lead with 12:09 left. Collins scored 11 of his 24 second-half points and Freddie Stanback scored all six of his points during the run to put the game away. Delaware never got closer than nine points the rest of theway as the Greyhounds led by double-digits for the final seven minutes of the contest.
