FAIRFAX, VA -- Folarin Campbell was one of three George Mason players in double figures with a game-high 15 points and also added sevenrebounds and five assists as the Patriots broke away from a one-point halftime lead to post a 70-56 Colonial Athletic Association men’sbasketball win over the University of Delaware Saturday night at the Patriot Center.
Delaware, which lost its third straight game, fell to 4-9 and remained winless in CAA play with an 0-4 mark. The Hens shots just 36.5 percent from the field (19 of 52) and were outrebounded by a 47-34 margin. George Mason, which won its third straight game and its sixth in the last seven outings, improved to 10-4 (4-1 CAA).
The Hens trailed just 25-24 at the half but could never take control in the second half as they lost the battle on the boards and managed to hit just 11 of 28 second half shots. Delaware, whose 56 points was a season-low, is 0-4 in league play for the first time since 1988-89. The Hens, who will continue play Thursday night at CAA newcomer Northeastern, have now lost six straight CAA regular season road games.
Calvin Cannon (at right) came off the bench to lead the Blue Hens with 10 points while All American candidate Harding Nana scored a season-low seven points and pulled a game high eight rebounds before fouling out with 6:46 left to play, ending his streak of seven straight double-doubles. Raphael Madera added a season-high nine points. Delaware held George Mason, the league leader in field goal percentage (.490) and three-point field goal shooting (.375), to just 22 of 56 shooting (39.3 percent), including just 2 of 15 from beyond the arc.
George Mason, which defeated Delaware for the third straight time at the Patriot Center, also got 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds from Will Thomas and 14 points and six rebounds from Lamar Butler. The Patriots held a 24-13 advantage at the foul line.
“We played very well defensively in the first half but we gave up too many second chance points and committed too many unforced turnovers in the second half,” said Delaware head coach David Henderson. “We never got it going in the second half and they increased their lead at the foul line.”
The Blue Hens trailed 25-24 at the half and were behind just 35-31 with 15:47 left before George Mason put together a 12-1 run to put the game away. By the time the run was over, the Patriots led 47-32 with 11:40 remaining in the game.
