BOSTON – Another tough shooting performance on the road resulted in the University of Delaware falling to host Northeastern 73-64 in Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

The Blue Hens (3-18, 1-9 CAA), who lost their fourth straight game and fell to 0-6 on the road in CAA play, got 24 points from Herb Courtney and a season-high 19 more from Calvin Cannon (at right) but couldn’t overcome cold-shooting performance that saw them connect on just 37 percent (21 of 54) of theirs shots from the field.

Northeastern (7-14, 5-5 CAA) evened its conference record as the Huskies won their second straight game and improved to 7-1 at home this season. Northeastern shot 50 percent from the field (21 of 42), drained eight three-pointers, and converted 20 of 23 free throws while committing just nine turnovers. Bennet Davis led four scorers in double figures with 18 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists, and four blocks while Adrian Martinez added 17 points and Matt Janning and Bobby Kelly each contributed 14 points. Janning pulled a team-high eight rebounds.

Courtney also pulled a team-high nine rebounds and reached double figures for the 18th time in 21 games this season while also surpassing the 20-point mark for the 10th time. Cannon, who hit four of Delaware’s eight three-pointers, also pulled five rebounds while Brian Johnson contributed 13 points. The Hens committed just 11 turnovers for the game and held a 32-27 advantage on the boards.

“Northeastern hit a couple of tough ones with the shot clock running down and that was great on their part,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “One of the things we talked about coming in was improving our performance on the road and I think we had a much better performance today. We got in a hole in the second half but we climbed back out of it. We just couldn’t hit a key bucket when we really needed it. It’s important, especially on the road, to have an answer to big run and we did that a few times today and that was nice to see.”

Delaware, which never led the entire game, trailed just 28-24 at halftime and was still behind just 32-28 at the 17:07mark. But Northeastern followed with an 11-2 run, highlighted by three Davis baskets inside and a Martinez three-pointer, to go up 39-28 with 14:27 left.

But the Blue Hens answered, outscoring the Huskies 12-5 over the next four minutes as Cannon connected on back-to-back three-pointers to cut the NU lead to 42-40 with 10:45 remaining.

Delaware trailed just 49-45 with 8:35 following a free throw by Brian Johnson, but Northeastern followed with a decisive 7-1 run, getting two free throws each from Martinez and Davis and a three-point play off a layup by Kelly with 6:38 left to advance the lead to 56-46. The Blue Hens never got closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Huskies connected on eight free throws in the final 1:14.
