NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team put four players in double figures and the Blue Hens used key runs late in the first half and early in the second to cruise to a 73-55 non-conference men’s basketball victory over Boston University Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens, now 4-6 on the season after their second straight win, got a game-high 18 points from Herb Courtney (at right), who became the 25th player in Delaware history to reach the 1,000-point plateau with his final basket of the game at the 2:30 mark. Freshman Alphonso Dawson added 17 points and led the Blue Hens with a career-best nine rebounds, while Marc Egerson added 14 points, eight boards and four assists. Jim Ledsome, like Egerson playing his first career game at the Carpenter Center, also scored 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field and grabbed four rebounds.

The Terriers, who fell to 3-7 on the season and had their two-game winning streak snapped, were led by Corey Lowe who scored a team-high 13 points. Scott Brittain added 11 points and five rebounds for Boston University, while Carlos Strong contributed eight points off the bench.

Delaware, which shot a season-high 58.0 percent from the field (29 of 50) and held a 35-33 rebounding advantage, the second consecutive game the Blue Hens won the rebounding battle, won its third straight home game for the first time since the first three home contests of the 2004-05 season.

Delaware, which led for all of the final 34 minutes of the game, held a slim 21-18 advantage with five minutes to play in the first half before closing the half on a 12-3 run. Egerson ignited the spurt with four free throws, while Dawson and Edwin Santiago each added four points in the run to send the Blue Hens to the half up 33-21.

After Brittain opened the second half scoring with a tip-in, Delaware answered with 10 consecutive points, going up 43-23 with 16:11 remaining on a layup by Courtney. Marques Johnson ended the run with a layup for the Terriers, but the Blue Hens responded by scoring 12 of the next 14 points to take their largest lead of the night at 55-27 on a jumper by Brian Johnson with 12:16 to play.

The Terriers answered with a 15-5 run to pull within 60-42 with 7:20 to go, but Santiago found Ledsome for a layup, Egerson converted a layup, and D.J. Boney found Dawson for a three-pointer to extend the UD lead back to 25 points.

“Our shooting percentage tonight was a product of our good offense and even better defense,” said Delaware second-year head coach Monté Ross, whose team defeated its third America East Conference opponent in as many tries this season. “We got some easy fastbreak looks, and when our shots are going down it looks pretty. Our guys are playing together and are getting comfortable in their roles; it’s really starting to come together.”

Courtney, who reached the 500-rebound plateau in Wednesday’s win over Vermont, went 8 of 12 from the field to become the 12th player in Delaware history to record at least 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. Dawson was 6 of 13 from the field with three three-pointers while Egerson finished 4 for 5 from the floor with a pair of three pointers and hit all four of his free throw attempts.

The Blue Hens travel to Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Maryland on Friday at 6 p.m.
