Delaware To Face Rival Drexel Friday in First Round of CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament

RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will be the seventh seed in the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and will face 10th-seeded Drexel Friday at 6 p.m. in the first round.

The Blue Hens went 13-16 during the regular season and finished in a tie for sixth place in the league standings with a 9-9 conference mark, tied for UD’s second best CAA record in its seven years in the league. Delaware is led by Marc Egerson (at right), who is averaging 13.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

The Dragons finished 12-19 overall and were tied for 10th with a 5-13 conference record.

Other first round games on Friday feature No. 8 seed Hofstra facing No. 9 seed Towson at 12 noon, No. 5 seed William & Mary taking on No. 12 seed Georgia State at 2:30 p.m., and No. 6 seed Northeastern facing No. 11 seed James Madison at 8:30 p.m.

The winner of the Delaware-Drexel game will take on second-seeded UNC Wilmington Saturday at 6 p.m.in the quarterfinals, while No. 3 seed George Mason will face the winner of the Northeastern-James Madison game at 8:30 p.m. Top-seeded VCU will face the winner of the Hofstra-Towson game at 12 noon, and No. 4 seed Old Dominion will take on the winner of the William & Mary-Georgia State game at 2:30 p.m.

The tournament semifinals will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., with the final on Monday at 7 p.m. All games will be held at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, VA.

Friday’s first round games will be webstreamed on www.caasports.com, while the four Saturday quarterfinal oontests and both semifinal games on Sunday will be televised by CN8. The championship game on Monday will be televised by ESPN.

Delaware and Drexel split their two regular season games this season with each team winning on its opponent’s floor. The Blue Hens posted a 67-63 victory at the Daskalakis Center on January 5, while the Dragons recorded a 62-60 win at the Carpenter Center on February 16.
