NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware guard Alphonso Dawson (at right) was named to the CollegeHoops.net High-Major Freshman Honorable Mention Team, the web site announced last week.

Dawson, a native of Harrisburg, PA (Harrisburg HS), started all 31 games during his rookie campaign for the Blue Hens, ranking third on the team with 11.0 points per game and fourth with 4.5 rebounds per contest. Dawson, who was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team, reached double figures in 20 games and was selected the CAA Rookie of the Week a school-record four times. He scored a season-high 25 points against VCU on February 9, tied for the fourth most by a Delaware freshman in school history, and was third on the Blue Hens with both 38 assists and 28 steals.

The first team consisted of Armon Johnson of Nevada, P’Allen Stinnett of Creighton, Charles Jenkins of Hofstra, Austin Daye of Gonzaga, and Herb Pope of New Mexico State. R.L. Horton of Southern Miss, Chris Wright of Dayton, Tirrell Baines of Marshall, Billy White of San Diego State, and Lavoy Allen of Temple comprised the second team. Dawson was joined on the honorable mention team by Kevin Anderson of Richmond, Papa Dia of SMU, Dairese Gary of New Mexico, Steven Gray of Gonzaga, Sam Maniscalco of Bradley, and Chad Tomko of UNC Wilmington.

Dawson led the Blue Hens to a 14-17 overall and record and a 9-9 mark in the CAA this year, as Delaware’s 14 wins signified a nine-game improvement over the 2006-07 season.
