NEWARK, Del. -- Jawan Carter (at right) scored just nine points, but his three-pointer with 42 seconds left in overtime put the Blue Hen up for good and two more free throws helped seal the victory as the University of Delaware snapped Drexel's seven-game winning streak with a thrilling 73-70 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball win Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware (10-14, 4-8 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak but won its third straight home game as Marc Egerson led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Johnson added a season-high 20 points to go with four assists.

Egerson surpassed the 20-point mark for the ninth time this season as he posted his league-leading 11th double-double of the season. The Hens connected on 7 of 14 shots from beyond the three-point arc and connected on 22 of 30 free throws, including six of eight in overtime.

Drexel (12-9, 8-4 CAA), which sent the game into overtime when Tremayne Hawthorne drained two three-pointers in the final minute, lost for the first time in nearly a month as the Dragons missed on 9 of 11 shots from the field in the extra period.

Scott Rodgers led the Dragons as he reached double figures in scoring for the fifth straight game 17 points while Samme Givens came off the bench to add 15 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double, Hawthorne finished with 11 points, and Evan Neisler added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Drexel could not take advantage of a 52-32 rebounding advantage that included 23 offensive rebounds, including seven by Givens.

“We are very happy to get this win,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross, whose team avenged a 79-69 loss to Drexel back on Jan. 20. “I’m proud of these guys. Our defense was tremendous tonight except for allowing too many second shots. I thought the key to the win was throwing the ball inside to Marc Egerson. That allowed just to have great balance.”

Drexel, whose seven straight wins was the longest current streak in the CAA, led for almost the entire second half before a 14-2 run by Delaware, highlighted by seven points from Egerson, gave the Blue Hens a 64-58 lead with 1:04 left in regulation.

But the Dragons rallied as Hawthorne drained a three-pointer with 56 seconds left, and after a Delaware turnover, tied the game on another triple with 14 seconds left. A short jumper by Delaware’s Carter missed just before the buzzer to send the game into the extra session.

The Blue Hens, who have now won five of their last six overtime game since 2004-05 and are 2-0 this season, never trailed during the extra session. Drexel tied the score at 67-67 on a free throw by Leon Spencer with 1:14 remaining, but the Hens came back to take the lead for good when Carter drained his only three-pointer of the night with 42 seconds left and then followed with two free throws to push the lead to 72-68.

Givens cut the lead to 72-70 on a layup with 21 seconds left, but the Hens came back to preserve the win as Johnson hit one throw eight seconds later. Drexel had the chance to tie the game again but Jamie Harris and Hawthorne each missed on three-point attempts in the final five seconds.

Drexel sprinted out to a 20-9 lead in the first nine minutes as the Blue Hens missed their first six shots from the field and didn’t get on the board until D.J. Boney hit a layup five minutes into the contest. The Dragons still led by 10 at 28-18 with 6:01 left, but Delaware rallied by outscoring Drexel 12-6 the rest of the stanza to narrow the deficit to 34-30 at the break.

The Blue Hens got down by six early in the second half, but fought back to tie the game three times, the last at 45-45 on two free throws by Egerson with 11:01 left. Drexel responded with a 7-2 run, including a three-pointer by Hawthorne, and stayed in for the next eight minutes before an Egerson trey gave Delaware the lead at 58-57 with 2:57 left.

The game marked the 140th all-time meeting in a spirited rivalry that began in 1911-12 as the Hens upped their slim advantage to 72-68.
