NEWARK, Del. -- Hofstra junior guard Charles Jenkins scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in the second half and dished out eight assists and Greg Washington scored three big baskets down the stretch as the Pride snapped the University of Delaware’s four-game home winning streak with a 69-59 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens (11-16, 5-10 CAA), coming off a spirited 66-58 win over CAA contender George Mason Thursday night, could not continue the momentum as they let a five-point halftime slip away and shot just 35 percent from the field while committing 16 turnovers. Delaware has not won consecutive games since defeating Toledo 74-63 on Dec. 30 and Virginia Commonwealth 81-79 on Jan. 3.

Brian Johnson scored in double figures for the fourth straight game as led the Blue Hens with 16 points and four assists while Alphonso Dawson (at right) added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench and D.J. Boney contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in his second consecutive start.

Marc Egerson, the CAA’s leading rebounder (10.5 per game) who was saddled with foul trouble most of the afternoon, was held to seven points but pulled a team-high nine rebounds.

Hofstra (17-9, 9-6 CAA), which swept the season series from the Hens after also downing Delaware 66-61 in Hempstead, N.Y. back on Jan. 7, won its third straight game and its seventh in the last nine outings. Nathaniel Lester added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Washington finished with 10 points off the bench in just 13 minutes of action.

The Pride shot a sizzling 61.5 percent from the field (16 of 26) in the second half and turned the ball over just 10 times. Jenkins, averaging 18 points per game, surpassed the 20-point mark for the 12th time this season.

"We did a pretty good job of rebounding and limiting their second shots today," said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. "But our second key was taking care of the basketball and we didn't do that. We just weren't as good defensively in the second half. Hofstra went inside and we didn't have an answer for that."

Hofstra used an early 12-0 run in the second half to erase a seven-point deficit and outscored the Hens 17-7 over the final five minutes to break a 52-52 tie, hitting six straight free throws in the final minute to keep the Hens away.

The Pride led by as much as six points at 17-11 with 9:43 left in the first half but proceeded to miss 13 straight field goal attempts over a span of nearly seven minutes to allow the Hens back in the game. Delaware took advantage, going ahead for the rest of the half at 19-17 on a Boney three-pointer.

Dawson drained a three-pointer at the 3:06 mark and Jawan Carter converted three free throws with one second left in the half to send the Hens up 27-22 at the break.

Delaware took its biggest lead of the game at 29-22 on a jumper by Johnson one minute into the second half but wouldn't score again for another five minutes as Hofstra used a 12-0 run, behind seven points from Jenkins, to take a 36-31 lead with 14:10 remaining.

The Hens came back to tie the score at 40-40 with 11:20 left and the game featured two more lead changes before the final tie of the game at 52-52 when Johnson’s drive in the lane knotted the score with 5:19 remaining.

Washington, a 6-10 sophomore forward who entered the game averaging just 5.1 points per game, then went to work for the Pride. He hit two short jumpers from an identical spot on the left baseline in a 20-second span and then stepped back to drain a 15-footer from the left wing with 1:34 left to put Hofstra up 61-55.

Delaware never got closer than four the rest of the way as Jenkins hit a layup with 1:08 left for a 63-57 lead and then iced the game with four straight free throws in the final 27 seconds. The Hens missed four straight three-pointers and turned the ball over once in its five possessions over the final minute of play.
