NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware rallied back from a 17-point second half deficit to pull to within one with under seven minutes left, but Marist followed with an 8-0 run to regain control and moved on to a 74-69 men's basketball victory over the Blue Hens Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Marist (4-8), which snapped a four-game losing streak and avenged an 88-83 overtime loss to Delaware back in November, got a career-high game from forward Ryan Schneider, who scored 22 points and pulled 19 rebounds. R.J. Hall added 12 points, including three three-pointers, and Javon Parris chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

Schneider’s 19 rebounds were the fourth most ever in the 17-year history of the BCC and the most ever by a visiting player. Marist played without starting point guard David Devezin due to a foot injury.

Delaware (5-7), which had a three-game win streak snapped, got 24 points from Jawan Carter (at right), his sixth 20-point effort of the season, while Marc Egerson posted his seventh double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Alphonso Dawson also contributed 10 points and six rebounds for Delaware.

The Blue Hens, who fell to 1-4 at home this season, could never overcome a slow start as they hit just 6 of 29 shots from the field in the first half and fell behind 37-23 at the break. Delaware missed on 10 of its first 12 shots and finished the night by hitting only 23 of 65 shots from the field (35.4 percent) while also being outrebounded 42-32 by the Red Foxes.

“We are still a maturing team and it’s frustrating not to have that consistency that you need,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross, whose team was coming off a 70-68 win at Boston University Sunday. “We made a nice run in the second half but Marist responded well. I was really disappointed in our defense. It’s been our staple all year but it wasn’t there tonight.”

Marist, which it on 27 of 52 shots from the field (51.9 percent) and converted 7 of 21 three-point attempts for the game, built the lead to as high as 17 points at 46-29 in the opening minutes of the second half and still led by double-digits at the 12:19 mark before a torrid Blue Hen comeback.

Delaware used a 15-3 run to pull to within 55-54 with 6:27 left when Brian Johnson scored the Hens’ seventh straight point with a layup, but Marist responded with a layup by Schneider and back-to-back three-pointers from Dejuan Goodwin and Hall to take back control at 63-54 with 4:19 left and pushed the advantage back up to double digits at 66-56 on a free throw by Lawrence Williams with 1:44 left.

The Hens pulled to within four points twice in the final minute, the last on a Carter layup with 21 seconds left to narrow the margin to 71-67, but Kaylen Gregory hit one free throw and Schneider added two more from the foul line to put the game away for Marist. The Red Foxes hit on six of seven free throws in the final 40 seconds to ice the win.
