NEWARK, Del. -- Jawan Carter (at right) and Marc Egerson combined for 44 points and the University of Delaware used a 15-0 run in the first half to take control and led the rest of the way for a 74-63 non-league men's basketball win over Toledo Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Carter surpassed the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season and finished with 24 points while Egerson overcame foul trouble by adding 20 points and a team-high nine rebounds as the Blue Hens (6-7) won for the fourth time in the last five games.

Alphonso Dawson chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds, D.J. Boney came off the bench to contribute 10 points, Jim Ledsome scored eight points and pulled eight rebounds, and Brian Johnson dished out a season-high eight assists to pace the team effort. Carter and Egerson each hit four three-pointers as the Blue Hens dropped in a season-high 12 treys, knocking down 8 of 12 attempts in the opening 20 minutes.

Toledo (2-10), which lost its fifth straight game and remained winless on the road at 0-7 this year, got a career-high 24 points from Jonathan Amos with Tyrone Kent adding 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds despite foul trouble.

"Toledo shot the ball well in the second half but we responded each time they made a run," said Delaware head coach Monté Ross, whose team also downed the Rockets 77-69 last season in Ohio. "Our guys did an excellent job of stepping up on defense and taking charges tonight. Our zone had a big effect in the game and we will use it more as we go forward."

Toledo tied the game at 22-22 with 4:47 left in the first half but the Blue Hens took off on a 15-0 run, led by eight points from Carter, to take control. Delaware took a 37-25 lead into halftime as Carter and Egerson combined for 28 points.

The Rockets, who hit 16 of 28 shots from the field in the second half (57.1 percent), used that hot shooting to slowly narrow the margin and took advantage of a 10-1 run to cut the Delaware lead to 52-49 with 8:15 left to play.

But Boney answered for the Hens with a three-pointer, Carter converted a conventional three-point play, and Ledsome hit two free throws to push the lead back to nine at 60-51.

Ledsome’s dunk pushed the lead to double figures at 64-54 with 4:24 left, but Toledo refused to give in as Kent nailed a three-pointer, and after Amos scored on a layup, added a jumper to narrow the deficit to 65-61 with 2:06 left.

The Rockets closed the gap to four again at 67-63 on a layup by Clayton Sterling with 1:13 remaining, but the Hens took over from there. Egerson drilled a three-pointer from 25 feet with the shot clock winding down to push Delaware’s lead back to seven and he and Carter each hit two free throws in the final 32 seconds to preserve the win.
