NEWARK, Del. -- University of Vermont center Colin McIntosh hit on 11 of 15 shots from the field and finished with a career-high 25 points as the Catamounts pulled away in the second half and handed the University of Delaware a 78-63 non-league men's basketball setback Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens (2-3) had a two-game winning streak snapped despite getting 15 points each from guard Alphonso Dawson and Jawan Carter (at right). Delaware shot just 34.2 percent from the field (23 of 67) and connected on 7 of 27 three-point attempts.

Vermont, which took the University of Maryland to overtime before losing 89-74 on Friday, improved to 2-2. The Catamounts broke open a close game midway through the second half, outscoring the Hens 14-2 after Delaware had narrowed the lead to 44-43 with 12:11 left to play. McIntosh also pulled five rebounds to go with his 25 points in just 27 minutes of action.

"This is by far the most disheartening game we've played in my short tenure here," said Delaware third-year head coach Monté Ross. "We talk a lot about the class of shots we take and that went out the window tonight. We'll address certain issues because we have to get better."

Guard Mike Trimboli added 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists and forward Marquis Blakely recorded his second straight double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Vermont, which connected on a sizzling 16 of 26 second half shots from the field (61.5 percent) and drained 22 of 29 free throws. The Catamounts won their second straight game at the BCC after 13 straight losses.

Forward Marc Egerson added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens while D.J. Boney and Edwin Santiago each scored seven off the bench. Delaware struggled from the field all night, hitting just 9 of 31 first half shots from the field and only 14 of 36 in the second half. Dawson was just 6 of 20 from the field while Carter was 5 of 16. Delaware also struggled from the foul line where the Hens connected on 10 of 21 tries.

Although the Hens held their first opponent of the season under 80 points, the loss was UD’s worst at home since a 66-46 setback to George Mason on Feb. 14, 2006.

A competitive first half saw the lead change eight times before Vermont took a 30-26 advantage into the break. Delaware gained what proved to be its last lead of the game at 18-17 with 8:41 left in the opening stanza before the Catamounts took control with an 8-0 run that was highlighted by four points from Blakely.

Vermont jumped out early in the second half and upped its lead to as much as nine points at 37-28 before the Hens battled back and cut the margin to 44-43 on a jumper by Santiago with 12:11 left to play. But that would be as close as the Hens would get the rest of the night.

The Catamounts embarked on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to take control as a jumper by McIntosh pushed the lead to 58-45 with 7:21 remaining. After Egerson hit a jumper with 9:15 left to play to cut the lead to 50-45, the Hens then missed their next 13 shots from the field before an Egerson dunk with 1:37 left ended the drought. The Catamounts led by as much as 25 points at 77-52 with 1:53 remaining.
