RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware junior guard Jawan Carter (Chester, Pa./Tatnall) was named to the second team All-Colonial Athletic Association at the CAA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet at the Richmond Downtown Marriott Thursday night.
Delaware (7-23) is the No. 12 in the CAA Tournament being held this weekend at the Richmond Coliseum and will take on No. 5 seed VCU (20-8) in a first round game Friday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face fourth-seeded George Mason Saturday in the quarterfinalas at 2:30 p.m. The tournament continues through Monday with the champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Carter was joined on the all-conference second team by Denzel Bowles of James Madison, Cam Long of George Mason, Joey Rodriguez of VCU, and David Schneider of William & Mary.
The All-CAA first team consisted of CAA Player of the Year Charles Jenkins of Hofstra, Chaisson Allen of Northeastern, Matt Janning of Northeastern, Gerald Lee of Old Dominion, and Larry Sanders of VCU.
Carter, who has started all 30 games for the Blue Hens this season, leads the team and ranks second in the league with 18.6 points per game. The Division I leader with 39.4 minutes played per game, Carter also ranks second in the CAA with 4.9 assists per game, fourth with 2.4 three-pointers made per game, seventh with an 80.8 free throw percentage, and eighth with a 1.7 assist/turnover ratio.
Carter has reached double figures in 29 of 30 games this season, while his current 23-game double figure scoring streak ranks fifth all-time at Delaware. He has reached the 20-point mark 12 times this season, including a career-high 35 points at Penn and 30 against Northeastern. Carter, who reached the 1,000-point mark of his Blue Hen career last week, ranks sixth in Delaware history with 135 career three-pointers made and 25th with 1,038 points.
The third team All-CAA consisted of Joe Dukes of Georgia State, Ben Finney of Old Dominion, Jamie Harris of Drexel, Quinn McDowell of William & Mary, and Julius Wells of James Madison.
CAA Rookie of the Year Chris Fouch of Drexel, Luke Hancock of George Mason, Halil Kanacevic of Hofstra, Darren White of James Madison, and Chaz Williams of Hofstra made up the CAA All-Rookie Team.
The CAA All-Defensive Team consisted of CAA Defensive Player of the Year Larry Sanders of VCU, Chaisson Allen of Northeastern, Kent Bazemore of Old Dominion, Robert Nwankwo of Towson, and Greg Washington of Hofstra.
Baptiste Bataille of Northeastern, Trian Iliadis of Old Dominion, Darion Jeralds of UNC Wilmington, Brian Morris of Towson, and David Schneider of William & Mary comprised the CAA All-Academic First Team. Jihad Ali of Georgia State, Matt Janning of Northeastern, Marcus Kitts of William & Mary, Quinn McDowell of William & Mary, and Miklos Szabo of Hofstra made up the second team. Ben Felix of Northeastern, Brian McDonald of Northeastern, Daniel Mercer of UNC Wilmington, Adam Pegg of Delaware, and Josh Sheets of UNC Wilmington were named All-Academic Honorable Mention.
Tony Shaver of William & Mary was named the CAA Coach of the Year, while David Schneider of William & Mary earned the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
