NEWARK, Del. -- Walter Cloud, who lettered two seasons for the University of Delaware men’s Basketball team and led the squad to the 1968 Middle Atlantic Conference Middle Five championship, passed away at the age of 64 on Monday, August 10 in Lewes, Del.
A native of Wilmington, Del. and a standout player at P.S. duPont High School, Cloud (at right) was a 6-1 guard/forward who lettered for the Blue Hens in 1966-67 and 1967-68 for head coach Dan Peterson.
After transferring from Saint Joseph’s after his sophomore year, he was the sixth man on the 1966-67 Blue Hen squad that posted a 15-9 record and averaged 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He helped lead the 1967-68 team to a mark of 16-7 that included the MAC Middle Five title. He averaged 3.0 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in his senior year.
He worked until retirement with UPS delivering in the north Wilmington area and also drove part-time with Dynamic Physical Therapy. He also served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Beverly Greenberg Cloud and their daughter, Meredith Lindsey. He is also survived by brothers, Joseph and wife Joyce, Jeffery and wife Carol, Gregory and wife Brenda.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14, at 11 a.m., in the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington (www.mccreryfuneralhome.com and 302-478-2204). Visitation with the family will start at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Lombardy Cemetery on Route 202.
