NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware senior point guard Brian Johnson suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee playing basketball on Wednesday and will undergo surgery in the upcoming weeks.
Johnson, who is expected to miss the entire 2009-10 season, will likely sit out the year as a redshirt and return to the Blue Hens for the 2010-11 season.
Johnson has started all 94 games during his first three years at Delaware, and he ranks fourth in Blue Hen history with 450 career assists. This past season Johnson averaged a career-best 10.0 points per game while ranking second in the Colonial Athletic Association with 5.0 assists per game and fourth with a 2.0 assist/turnover ratio. He led the league with a 48.2 three-point percentage in conference-only games and came on strong late in the year, averaging 14.5 points over the final eight games of the regular season.
A 2007 CAA All-Rookie Team selection, Johnson set a UD single-season record by playing 1,192 minutes in 2006-07 during his freshman season. He averaged 9.6 points as a rookie, while he led the Blue Hens with 130 assists.
Johnson led Delaware with 161 assists, 40 three-pointers made and a 39.6 three-point field goal percentage as a sophomore, as he averaged 9.5 points per game. He ranked second in the CAA with 5.2 assists and 37.52 minutes played, and was third with a 2.15 assist/turnover ratio.
Johnson currently ranks eighth at Delaware with 3,454 career minutes played, 12th with 116 three-pointers made, and 32nd with 911 points.
