NEWARK, DE -- Tournament Most Valuable Player
John Gordon scored a game-high 22 points, including
five three-pointers, to lead the University of Delaware to
its second straight America East men's basketball tournament
title with an 86-67 win over Drexel Saturday at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens, who won their fourth league title and
second straight, now move on to the NCAA Tournament. No. 1
seed Delaware (25-5), which had four players score in double
figures, won its 13th straight games, including the last 10
by 13 or more points. The America East No. 1 seed has now
won 18 straight tournament games.
Drexel, which suffered three of its nine losses to
Delaware this season, fell to 20-9 despite 19 points from
center Joe Linderman. Guard Bryant Coursey added 13 points
while Mike Kouser added 12 points and seven rebounds and
Mike DeRocckis added 10 points. Linderman and Coursey were
named to the All-Tournament team.
Forward Mike Pegues added 18 points, Tyrone
Perry scored 17 points, Kestutis Marciulionis had
16 points, and John Bennett, playing with a sore
back, had a game-high 14 points to lead Delaware. Pegues and
Perry joined Gordon on the All-Tournament team.
The Blue Hens led 37-32 at the half and pulled away early
in the second half, starting the second stanza on a 10-4
run. Drexel cut the lead to 47-41 with 16 minutes left, but
the Hens countered by scoring 10 of the next 12 points and
were on their way.
