Delaware 81, Hartford

January 16, 1999
WEST HARTFORD, CT -- Junior forward Mike Pegues
erupted for a career-high 38 points, his sixth 30-point
effort of the season, to lead the University of Delaware to
an 81-68 victory over host Hartford in an America East men's
basketball game Saturday at Chase Arena.
Pegues, a 6-5 junior forward from Forestville, MD
(DeMatha) who entered the game as the nation's No. 3 leading
scorer at 24.8 ppg, hit on 11 of 19 from the field and 16 of
19 from the line for his 38 points, surpassing his previous
best of 35 vs. Virginia in December.
The Hens, who dropped their first conference game of the
season Thursday at Vermont, improved to 12-3, 5-1 America
East. Hartford, which got 27 points from all-league guard
Justin Bailey, lost for the sixth time in its last eight
games and fell to 5-10, 3-4. Keyon Smith added 11 points for
the Hawks
Delaware used a big rebounding advantage and timely foul
shooting in the win. The Hens hit on 31 of 38 free throws,
connecting on 15 of 15 in the final two minutes and 35
seconds to pull away. John Bennett pulled a game-high
10 rebounds to pace a 40-29 Delaware advantage on the
boards.
Delaware junior guard John Gordon added 21 points
for the Blue Hens as he connected on five of seven
three-pointers. He also went over the 1,000 point mark for
his career, which includes this season and two previous
seasons at the University of Maine.
Delaware led 34-26 at the half but Hartford stayed close
and cut the lead to two points twice, the second time at
56-54 with 7:20 left. But Gordon followed with a
three-pointer and Pegues connected on five free throws over
the next minute and the Hens led by at least six the rest of
the way.
The Hens played without top reserve Kestutis
Marciulionis who sat out while the NCAA investigates his
eligibility. Marciulionis played one game for a professional
team in Lithuania as a 17-year old in 1993 but never signed
a contract or received pay.
Pegues' 16 free throws, just two shy of the UD single
game record, was the most by a UD player since Rick
Meccariello had 16 vs. West Chester Feb. 19, 1977.
