BOSTON – Junior guard John Gordon hit one free throw with 31 seconds left and made a big steal in the final seconds as the University of Delaware hung on for a 72-69 America East men’s basketball win over host Northeastern Friday night at Cabot Gym.

The Hens (15-5, 8-3), coming off an emotional 99-91 overtime win over Drexel Wednesday, hit on 9 of 18 three-pointers in posting their second straight win to stay in third place in the America East standings. Northeastern (6-12, 3-7), which led by as much as five points in the final seven minutes, got 15 points each from guards Harold Miller and Marcus Blossom. Forward Lin Lattimore added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Delaware senior guard Tyrone Perry led the Blue Hen effort with 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists and converted on four of seven three-pointers. Kestutis Marciulionis, coming off a 33-point effort vs. Drexel, added 15 points, including two big three-pointers in the final four minutes, and Gordon and John Bennett each scored 12 points. Delaware forward Mike Pegues, the nation’s No. 3 leading scorer at 24.3 ppg, was held to just nine points, ending a streak of 40 straight games in double figures.

“We got off to a great start but Northeastern fought back,” said Delaware head coach Mike Brey, whose team won for the third time in four years at Northeastern. “I’d be lying if I said we weren’t fatigued. (following Wednesday’s overtime win and six-hour bus ride Thursday). We weren’t playing on all cylinders. But we have a mature team that did what it needed to do to win the game.”

Northeastern had cut the UD lead to 69-67 before Gordon was fouled with 31 seconds left to play. Gordon hit one of two, giving the Huskies back the ball. After a Northeastern timeout, Gordon stole the ball and hit Pegues for a layup that put the Hens up 72-67 with eight seconds left to play. Northeastern’s Marquis Wright hit a layup just before the buzzer for the final margin.

The Hens will be trying to complete their first Boston sweep since 1991-92 Sunday when Delaware takes on Boston University at 1 p.m.
