January 10, 1999

NEWARK, DE -- Junior forward Mike Pegues scored 27 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and pulled a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the University of Delaware to a 70-60 America East men's basketball victory over Towson University Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens, who won their 15th straight game at the BCC, improved to 11-2 (4-0 America East) and are off to their best conference start since going 14-0 in 1991-92. Guard Pete Mauro came off the bench to score 20 points, including five three-pointers, for Towson (2-10, 1- 3), which lost for the ninth time in the last 10 games.

Pegues, the nation's No. 3 scorer at 25.4 ppg, hit on 8 of 14 shots from the field and 11 of 13 from the line to become the 20th 1,000-point scorer in UD history.

Delaware jumped out to a 29-23 halftime lead but could never quite pull away. The Hens led by as much as 13 points early in the second half before the Tigers rallied, cutting the lead to four on a Brian Barber layup with 8:15 left. The Hens went back up by 12 again, but Towson came back and cut the lead to 60-55 with a Mauro three-pointer with 2:21 left. But the Hens followed with eight straight free throws in the final 1:46, including four by John Gordon, to hold off Towson.

Greg Miller and Gordon each scored 12 points and Kestutis Marciulionis came off the bench to add 10 for the Blue Hens. Barber added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Tigers.

The 1 p.m. game was delayed 42 minutes due to a power outage in Newark.
