NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's
basketball team bombed its way into the America East
Conference semifinal game, hitting a school record 12
three-pointers on its way to an 83-63 win over Towson before
a Bob Carpenter Center record home crowd of 5,209 Saturday
afternoon.
The No. 1 seed Blue Hens (23-5), who won their 11th
straight game, the second longest streak in UD history, will
take on Maine in Sunday's semifinal game. The Hens have now
won 21 of their last 22 home games. The Black Bears (19-8)
defeated Hartford 76-71 in the other semifinal Saturday.
Delaware junior guard John Gordon connected on 10 of 14
shots from the field, including six of nine from the
three-point line for 28 points and backcourt mate Tyrone
Perry hit for 21 points, including four three pointers to
lead the Blue Hens. The Hens hit 12 of 23 three-pointers,
tying the school single game record for three- pointers set
earlier this season vs. Delaware State.
Delaware hit on 54 percent of their shots from the field
(28-52), hitting .500 percent or better for the sixth
straight game. The Hens have won each of their eight games
by 13 points or more.
The Hens jumped out to an 11-0 lead and took a 43-20 lead
into intermission. Towson, the No. 9 seed (6-22) who
defeated No. 8 Boston University in a play-in game Friday
night, never got closer than 15 points in the second half.
Brian Barber led the Tigers with 14 points while Josh
Davalli added 11 points and Alphonso Hawes finished with 10
points and nine rebounds.
