Delaware vs. Virginia
December 27, 1998 at Charlottesville, VA

Virginia 72, Delaware 64

The University of Virginia had no answer for Delaware's Mike Pegues, but the Blue Hens had no explanation for their worst shooting night of the season.

Despite a career-high 35 points by Pegues, the Blue Hens dropped a 72-64 decision to host Virginia Sunday night at University Hall.

Delaware (8-2), which dropped its second straight after opening the season 8-0, hit just 2 of 24 three-pointers and wasn't able to convert down the stretch as Virginia (8-4) scored the game's final seven points. The Cavs have defeated Delaware nine straight times.

Pegues, the nation's second leading scorer at 24.9 ppg, hit on 12 of 26 shots from the field, was a perfect 11 of 11 from the foul line, and pulled seven rebounds. Kestutis Marciulionis was Delaware's only other double figure scorer as he came off the bench to score 10 points and hit the Hens' only two three pointers.

Virginia took a 31-26 halftime lead but the Hens came back in the second half, going up by as much as 54-49 with 9:23 left. The game was tied as late as the 4:42 mark at 58-58. Virginia went up 67-64 and Delaware had the chance to tie the game, but John Gordon's three pointer with 42.4 seconds left wouldn't fall. Virginia scored on 9 of its final 10 possessions.

Freshman Chris Williams led UVa with 26 points and seven rebounds while Willie Dersch added 15 points and Donald Hand added 11.
