January 14, 1999
BURLINGTON, VT - Freshman Corry McLaughlin had 16
points and 12 rebounds and scored the eventual game-winner
on a basket with 1:21 left to play as the University of
Vermont continued its home mastery over Delaware with a
64-63 America East men's basketball win Thursday night at
Patrick Gymnasium.
Delaware (11-3, 4-1 America East), the America East
leader, had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost its
first conference game of the season. Vermont improved to
6-7, 2-3 and defeated the Hens at home for the fifth
straight time.
The Hens, who built themselves a big hole when they went
down 15-2 to start the game, had a chance to win but Mike
Pegues was triple teamed in the lane with three seconds
left to play and was called for travelling. Delaware stole
the inbounds pass but couldn't get a shot off in time.
Pegues, the nation's No. 3 leading scorer at 25 points
per game, scored 22 points, pulled a team-high 10 rebounds,
and had five assists while John Gordon added 12
points and Kestutis Marciulionis came off the bench
to add 10 points.
Vermont also got 11 points each from guards Tobe Carberry
and Tony Orciari.
After falling behind 15-2, the Hens fought back and
trailed just 40-36 at halftime. The Hens got the lead at
42-40 two minutes into the second half and the game was
tight the rest of the way. Delaware took a 63-62 lead on two
Pegues free throws with 1:36 left but couldn't score
again.
The Hens were hurt by foul shooting as they converted
just 5 of 15 for the game, including 3 of 13 in the first
half. Vermont canned 8 of 11 from the line.
