Captures Individual Title as UD Harriers

MD -- University of Delaware sophomore PJ
Meany (Salesianum/Hockessin, DE) captured
the men's individual title, covering the
five-mile course in 26:26, to lead the
Blue Hen men to a second place team
finish, and the UD women placed seventh
overall, as the Delaware men's and women's
cross country teams opened the 2004 season
Saturday at the Towson Invitational at
Oregon Ridge.
Meany
led all 134 runners as he captured his
first career individual tite. Delaware
placed four runners in the top 10 to place
second in the team standings with 35
points, one shy of team champion Navy.
Salisbury was third with 94 followed by
Loyola and Howard in the 14-team
field.
On
the women's side, Delaware placed seventh
with 188 points in the 12-team field as
junior Allison Behrle (Stonewall
Jackson/Manassas, VA) was the Hens' top
finisher with a 36th place showing in a
time of 20:26 over the three-mile course.
George Washington was the team champion
with 43 points while Towson was second
with 64 followed by Hofstra, Loyola, and
Salisbury. Maryland Eastern Shore's Eva
Slavkova was the individual winner with a
time of 18:19.
Also
for the Delaware men, sophomore Brad
Dodson (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV) was
fifth (27:03), sophomore Mike Zeberkiewicz
(Salesianum/Newark, DE) was eighth
(27:11), and sophomore Kyle Schmid
(Towson/Lutherville, MD) was
ninth.
Also
for the Delaware women, freshman Colleen
O'Brien (North Hunterdon/Lebanon, NJ) was
38th (20:31), sophomore Leslie Wason
(Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) was 46th
(20:57), junior Brenda Greene
(Hanover/Hanover, MA) was 47th (21:01),
and sophomore Toni Riggi (South Glens
Falls/South Glens Falls, NY) was 49th
(21:02).
Delaware
will host the Delaware Invitational next
Saturday morning, Sept. 18, at White Clay
Creek State Park.
