Delaware Men's Cross Country Places 26th at Paul Short Invitational

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior P.J. Meany and sophomore Colleen O’Brien each led their respective Blue Hens teams once again Saturday as the University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country squads competed at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.

O’Brien (North Hunterdon/Lebanon, NJ) placed 16th individually in the women’s race while Meany (Salesianum/Hockessin, DE) was 44th overall in the men’s race. The Blue Hen men placed 26th out of 44 teams while the Delaware women tied for 34th place out of 47 teams.

Georgetown captured the men’s title with 123 points followed by LaSalle (154), Princeton (170), Auburn (218), and Columbia (234) in the top five. Columbia was the women’s team winner with 121 points, Georgetown (138), Tennessee (185), Maryland (226), and Cornell (230).

O’Brien, who led the Blue Hens for the eighth straight meet since last season, covered the course in 21:05.3, 37 seconds behind winner Elizabeth Maloy of Georgetown (20:28.0). Also for the Hens, Julia Somers was 96th (22:16.0), Jessica Leitsch was 228th (23:34.4), Renee Gresh was 251st (23:56.8), Leslie Wason was 267th (24:13.7), Liz Paul was 273rd (24:23.8), and Allison Behrle was 283rd (24:34.7).

Meany, who has now led Delaware in all three meets this season, placed 44th overall with a time of 24:45.0, 52 seconds behind individual champion Ryan Sheehan of Saint Francis (23:53.0). Also for the Hens, Sam Mackenzie placed 152nd (25:44), Kyle Schmid was 165th (25:54), Kevin Duprey was 166th (25:54), Tyler Mayforth finished at 194th (26:08), Mike Ward was 206th (26:13), and Brad Dodson was 218th (26:18).

Both University of Delaware teams will return to action Oct. 15 when they host the second Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, DE.
