BRONX, NY -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country teams closed out the 2006 fall season by competing at the 98th annual IC4A Championships (men) and 22nd annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships (women) Saturday at Van Cortlandt State Park.
The Delaware women placed ninth in the team standings with 238 points in the 13-team field while the UD men placed 13th overall with 333 points in the 15-team field. William & Mary won the men’s team title with 45 points, outdistancing James Madison (92), Yale (103), and Marist (161) in the field. On the women’s side, Cornell captured the title with 57 points followed by William & Mary (61), Villanova (79), Princeton (91), and Maryland (152).
Gregg Cantwell (at right), a sophomore from Port Jefferson, NY (Ward Melville High School), led the Blue Hen men for the second time this season as he placed 47th overall with a time of 26:18.0 on the five-mile course. Also for the Hens, Kyle Schmid was 57th (26:22.78), Nick Pyle was 88th (26:51.0), Jimmy Daly placed 109th (27:14.3), Kevin Kemmerle finished 114th (27:19.0), Tyler Mayforth was 125th (27:41.8), and Pat Wilcox was 135th (28:17.8). James Madison’s CW Moran was the individual winner with a time of 34:38.1.
On the womens’ side, Delaware junior Julia Somers was the Hens' top finisher with a 13th place finish to earn All-East honors. She ran a time of 18:28.3 and led the Blue Hens for the sixth straight meet.
Freshman Christina Antonopoulos posted a 48th place finish in a time of 19:13.1 over the 3.1 mile race while Brooke Maguire was 53rd (9:20.6), Ioanna Antonopoulos was 61st (9:31.1) Colleen O’Brien was 77th (19:56.9), Kerrigan was 92nd ( 20:29.2), Meghan Weaver was 95th (20:45.6), Annie Kowtuniak was 99th (20:55.5), Megan McGrath was 101st (21:16.2), and Sarah Vernon finished 104th (21:42.9).
In addition to the men’s race, a Coaches Five-Mile Run was also held on Saturday. Competing for the Blue Hens were Chris Bourke (12th, 27:41.0), Matt O’Brian (15th at 27:47.8), and 20th place finisher Tim Brock, 28:09. (20th in 28:09.7). New Hampshire’s Benjamin Jenkins won the race in 26:27.1.
In addition to the women's race, a Coaches Five-Mile Run was also held. Competing for the Blue Hens were Leslie Wason (6th, 21:41.0), Stefanie Gordon (8th, 21:46.9), Brittany Wilder (10th, 22:03.6); Stephanie LaFergola (11th, 22:08.4), Michelle Kocher (12th, 22:31.2).
