LOCK HAVEN, PA -- The University of Delaware women posted their best team finish since 1999 with a 10th place showing and the Blue Hen men placed 16th as a team at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships Saturday at Lock Haven University’s West Branch Course.
Delaware sophomore Julia Somers placed 34th overall with a time of 21:43.9 to lead the Blue Hen women, who put four runners in the top 100 to place 10th in the team standings with 317 points, the team’s best finish since a 10th place showing in 1999. Somers, who finished 46th at the meet last season, has now led the Blue Hens in five straight meets.
Blue Hen senior Kyle Schmid (at right) led the Delaware men for the second straight meet and for the third time this season as he finished 70th overall to lead the team to a 16th place team finish.
Princeton won the women’s team title with 56 points to outdistance Georgetown (77) and LaSalle (87) in the 28-team field. Villanova’s Frances Koons was the individual champion as she covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 20:02.9. Georgetown won the men’s team title with 66 points to outdistance American (79) and Villanova (91) in the 25-team field. Fairleigh Dickinson’s Samuel Chelanga won the individual title as he covered the 10-kilometer course in 30:09.6.
Also for the Delaware women, junior Colleen O’Brien was 52nd (22:00.1), freshman Christina Antonopoulos was 54th (22:03.7), freshman Ioanna Antonopoulos finished 75th (22:31.7), sophomore Brooke Maguire was 102nd (22:55.9), freshman Kellyn Wright placed 128th (23:27.2), and sophomore Lindsay Schmiedel was 154th (24:14.5).
Schmid covered the course in 32:39.0 to lead the Blue Hen men with a 70th place finish while sophomore Gregg Cantwell was 84th (32:50.9), freshman Nick Pyle finished 98th (33:08.2), sophomore Kevin Kemmerle was 126th (33:49.5), sophomore Jimmy Daly came in 135th (34:14.8), freshman Chris Bourke was 143rd (34:43.6), and junior Mike Zeberkiewicz was 156th (35:42.3).
Both Delaware teams will close out the 2006 season at the IC4A and ECAC Championships this Saturday at Van Cortlandt State Park in New York City.
