HOLMDEL, NJ -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country squads swept a pair of team titles and Blue Hen senior Kyle Schmid (at right) won the men’s individual title to highlight the 14th annual Monmouth Cross Country Invitational Friday afternoon at Holmdel Park.
Schmid covered the 8,000-meter course in 27:09 to edge teammate Nick Pyle by just two seconds and lead seven Blue Hen runners in the top 20 as Delaware captured the men’s team title with 39 points.
All 11 Delaware women runners, led by overall runner-up Christina Antonopoulos, placed in the top 11 to lead the Blue Hen women to the team title with 24 points.
In the men’s race, host Monmouth was second with 44 points followed by George Washington (45), Delaware State (117), and St. Peter’s (126). Felician won the Division 2 race. In the women’s race, host Monmouth was second with 33 points followed by Delaware State (89), and St. Peter’s (108). Felician won the Division 2-3 race.
Schmid, a senior from Lutherville, MD, won his second career cross country title and his first since capturing the 2006 Delaware Invitational #1. As a team, Delaware won its second team title of the fall after previously winning the season-opening Towson Invitational back in September.
In addition to Schmid and Pyre, Mike Ward was 11th (27:11), Chris Bourke placed 12th (28:30), Phil Weigel finished 13th (28:31), Kevin Kemmerle was 14th (28:32), and Ryan Kaiser finished (17th (29:06).
Antonopoulos covered the 5,000-meter women’s course in 19:17, 30 seconds behind winner Cailin Lynam of Monmouth. Also for Delaware, Karen Mandrachia was fourth (19:52), Cassie White was fifth (19:53), Yianna Antonopoulos was sixth (19:54), Isabel Graf placed seventh (20:15), Jennifer Watunya was 10th (20:30), and Christine Sloat finished 11th (20:32).
