NEWARK, DE -- The Blue Hen men’s cross country team captured the Delaware Invitational #2 while the UD women’s team finished second Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.
The Delaware men’s team finished first out of 12 teams at the meet with 41 points, easily ahead of second place Temple, which finished with 80 points. Towson won the women’s meet with 46 points, while the Blue Hen women placed second with 54 points.
Kyle Schmid (at right) paced the UD men’s squad as he finished in third place in the eight-kilometer race in 26:14, while Nick Pyle was fourth in 26:32. Mike Ward finished in ninth place in 27:05 for the Blue Hens, while Kevin Kemmerle placed 11th in 27:07 and Chris Bourke came in 14th place in 27:21. Jimmy Daly finished in 21st place in 27:35, while Ryan Kaiser was 23rd in 27:40 and Alex Gambogi came in 31st in 28:01.
Christina Antonopoulos led the Blue Hen women by finishing second in the five-kilometer course in 18:52, while Karen Mandrachia was seventh in 19:22. Yianna Antonopoulos came in 11th place in 19:35, while Jennifer Watunya was 15th in 19:40 and Isabel Graf came in 19th in 19:49. Liz Paul finished 20th in 19:50 while Christine Sloat was 23rd in 20:02, Kellyn Wright was 26th in 20:11, and Sarah Vernon placed 32nd in 20:32.
Peter Sang of Maryland-Eastern Shore won the men’s race in 25:53, while Merricia James of UMES took the women’s race in 18:44.
Both Blue Hen cross country teams will be back in action on Friday, October 26 when they compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, NY.
