University of Delaware Men Place Fourth, Women Fifth at Colonial Athletic Association Championships

MANASSAS, Va. -- The University of Delaware men placed three runners in the top 25 and finished fourth in the team standings and the Blue Hen women had two top 20 finishers and placed fifth overall at the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at George Mason’s Bull Run Regional Park.

The Blue Hen men, who were led by Chris Bourke’s (at right) 15th place finish, placed fourth for the third time in the last four years while the Delaware women, led by Christina Antonopoulos’ 11th place showing, finished in the top five for the fifth straight season.

William & Mary captured the team titles in both meets, winning for the ninth straight year on the men’s side and for the sixth straight time on the women’s side.

In the men’s race, the Tribe posted 20 points to win the title. Georgia State was second with 70 points followed by George Mason, Delaware, Virginia Commonwealth, Northeastern, Hofstra, and UNC Wilmington. Georgia State’s Mark Steeds captured the individual title with a time of 23:56 over the eight-kilometer field but the next seven spots went to William & Mary runners.

On the women’s side, William & Mary posted 27 points followed by James Madison, Georgia State, Northeastern, Delaware, UNC Wilmington, Towson, Virginia Commonwealth, Hofstra, and George Mason. Emily Anderson of William & Mary won the six-kilometer race in a time of 21:02 and was one of six Tribe runners to finish in the top 10.

Antonopoulos was the top Delaware finisher on the day and led the team for the third time this season as she placed 11th overall with a time of 21:54. She led the Hens at the meet for the second straight season after placing eighth a year ago. Her twin sister Yianna Antonopoulos placed 16th in 22:11 while Julia Somers was 25th (22:26), Karen Mandrachia finished 34th (22:59), Liz Paul was 36th (23:01), and Jen Watunya was 41st (23:11) to fill out the Hens’ top 50 finishers.

On the men’s side, Bourke led the Blue Hens for the fourth time this season as he ran to a time of 25:20 to finish 15th overall. Also for the Blue Hens, Pierce Conlon was 22nd (25:38), George Vernon was 23rd (25:38), Andy Weaver was 27th (25:50), Gregg Cantwell placed 29th (25:52), Steve Vincent was 30th (25:52), Rich Pisan placed 44th (26:56), Mitch Kastoff was 48th (27:11), and Taylor Hinson was 49th (27:18) to highlight top 50 finishers.

Both Delaware teams will continue action Nov. 15 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Princeton University.
