Chris Bourke Leads Delaware Men's Cross Country Team To First Place Finish at Blue Hen Classic

NEWARK, Del. -- Chris Bourke (at right) and Christina Antonopoulos each finished second in their respective races to lead the University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country teams to a pair of first place finishes at the Blue Hen Classic held Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.

The Delaware men’s team finished with 28 points to win the nine-team invitational, while Pittsburgh was second with 36 points. Millersville finished third with 83 points, ahead of West Chester (144), Gwynedd-Mercy (146), Delaware State (166), Howard (186), Coppin State (202) and Maryland-Eastern Shore (243).

The Blue Hen women also finished first out of nine teams, totaling 24 points in the meet. Millersville was second with 75 points, followed by Pittsburgh (77), Maryland-Eastern Shore (134), West Chester (146), Howard (178), George Mason (183), Delaware State (201) and Gwynedd-Mercy (202).

Bourke led the UD men by finishing second in the eight-kilometer race in 25:46.96, while Gregg Cantwell was third in 25:54.50 and Nick Pyle placed fourth in 25:59.98. Pierce Conlon was seventh in 26:36.63 while George Vernon finished 12th in 26:48.37, Andy Weaver placed 13th in 26:49.60, and Steve Vincent came in 14th in 26:51.66.

Rich Pisan finished 16th in 27:07.32 for the Blue Hens, while Taylor Hinson was 23rd in 27:25.43 and Alex Gambogi placed 25th in 27:28.25. Greg Kareis of Pittsburgh won the men’s individual title by crossing the finish line in 25:45.44.

Antonopoulos finished second in the five-kilometer race in 18:26.64 for the Delaware women, while her sister Yianna Antonopoulos was third in 18:28.45 and Julia Somers came in fourth in 18:46.55. Karen Mandrachia placed seventh in 19:10.16 for the Blue Hens, while Liz Paul was eighth in 19:10.83.

Lexi Ambrogi placed 10th for Delaware in 19:15.26, while Jen Watunya finished 11th in 19:18.67. Kellyn Wright came in 20th place in 19:54.62, while Ali Lambert was 26th in 20:13.86. Priscilla Jennings of Millersville won the women’s race with a time of 18:03.56.

Both Blue Hen cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, November 1 when Delaware competes in the CAA Championships hosted by George Mason. The men’s race will begin at 10 a.m. while the women’s race will start at 11 a.m.
