CENTREVILLE, Va. -- The University of Delaware men’s cross country team finished in eighth place while the women were 11th as both Blue Hen teams competed in the George Mason University Invitational held Saturday morning at Bull Run Park.
The UD men’s team totaled 243 points to finish eighth out of 16 teams. The Blue Hens were led by freshman George Vernon (at right), who finished 28th in the eight-kilometer race in 25:54. Andy Weaver placed 41st in 26:23 for Delaware, while Rich Pisan came in 68th place in 27:08. Nate Parmenter crossed the finish line in 27:26 to finish in 79th place, just ahead of teammates Mike O’Brian in 27:29 and Alex Gambogi in 27:30.
Mitch Kastoff finished in 85th place after crossing the line in 27:36 for Delaware. Virginia easily won the men’s title with 19 points, ahead of Columbia with 50 and Maryland with 85. The Cavaliers’ Emil Heineking took the men’s race with a time of 24:40.
The Blue Hen women’s squad finished with 308 points to place 11th out of 16 teams. Delaware was led by freshman Jessie Ermak, who finished 47th in the six-kilometer race in 23:57. Kellyn Wright came in 61st place in 24:29, while Sarah Ports was 66th in 24:38.
Sophie Kauffman finished 86th for the Blue Hens in 25:18, while Ali Lambert was 92nd in 25:34. Lindsay Schmiedel placed 104th with a time of 26:00, finishing just ahead of Tracey Powell in 26:02 and Kirsten Fitch in 26:03. Rachel Schaefer placed 108th in 26:05, while Allie Gedney was 118th in 26:30 and Sarah Vernon came in 126th in 27:10. Meghan McGrath finished 134th in 28:01, while Amanda McGowan was 135th in 28:02 and Kaylee Pineault came in 136th in 28:57.
Virginia also won the women’s title with 30 points, ahead of Columbia with 41 and Maryland with 91. Lauretta Dezubay of Virginia captured the women’s race with a time of 21:29.
Both Delaware teams take next weekend off before hosting the Blue Hen Classic on Saturday, October 18.
