University of Delaware Men Harriers Place Second at UD Blue & Gold Invitational

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s cross country team captured the team title and the Blue Hen men posted a second place finish to highlight the action at the UD Blue & Gold Invitational Saturday morning at rainy and muddy White Clay Creek State Park.

Jessie Ermak placed fourth overall with a time of 19:03.39 over five-kilometer course and Julia Somers was sixth to lead the Blue Hen women, who posted 46 points to outdistance George Mason for the team crown. On the men’s side, Delaware’s Nick Pyle was sixth overall with a time of 25:59.51 on the eight-kilometer layout to lead the Hens to 67 points and a second place showing behind George Mason (30).

In the women’s race, Towson was third with 70 points followed by Millersville, American, Maryland-Eastern Shore, West Chester, Temple, Loyola, Howard, Delaware State, Morgan State, Lincoln, and District of Columbia in the 14-team field.

In the men’s race, George Mason captured the title followed by Delaware, Temple, American, Millersville, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Howard, West Chester, Morgan State, Delaware State, Loyola, Coppin State, Lincoln, and District of Columbia in the 14-team field.

Justus Davis of Morgan State won the men’s race with a time of 25:38.33 while Priscilla Jennings of Millersville captured the women’s individual title with 17:51.53.

In addition to Ermak and Somers (19:13.93), Delaware had five other runners finish in the top 20 as Katy Loughran was 11th (19:33.90), Katie Deinert was 12th (19:35.49), Karen Mandrachia was 13th (19:37.23), Lexi Ambrogi was 16th (19:44.68), and Kellyn Wright was 17th (19:46.88).

In addition to Pyle, the Blue Hen men placed four other runners in the top 25 as Chris Bourke was ninth (26:12.93), Andy Weaver was 15th (26:34.66), Steve Vincent placed 16th (26:43.53), and Kevin Kemmerle finished 25th (27:07.93).

Both Delaware teams will be off next weekend and will return to action Oct. 31 when the Blue Hens compete at the Colonial Athletic Association championships at James Madison.
